De Sengalese kora-speler Ablaye Cissoko en de Franse accordeonist Cyrille Brotto spelen op INSTANT een adembenemend mooie set.

De Afrikaanse dubbel-harp, de kora, wint steeds meer terrein binnen de westerse muziek. We kwamen het instrument onder andere al tegen bij het AKA Trio, in de combinatie kora, gitaar en percussie. Of bij de Vlaamse violist Wouter Vandenabeele, samen met Bao Sissoko. Zo ook de Cubaanse pianist Omar Sosa die in 2017 het album Transparant Water opnam met de kora-speler Seckou Keita. Allemaal prachtige voorbeelden waar de kora magisch wordt geïncorporeerd binnen het westers metier, gelardeerd met Afrikaanse invloeden.

Iets soortgelijks komen we ook tegen op het magische album INSTANT van Ablaye Cissoko en Cyrille Brotto. Twee musici die aan elkaar gewaagd zijn. Twee muzikanten die hun instrument vakkundig beheersen en daardoor moeiteloos kunnen laveren tussen de Zuid-Franse folk en de Mandingo-traditie uit West-Afrika, waar modaliteit en polyritmiek organische elementen zijn. Bovendien is Ablaye Cissoko een bevlogen zanger met een onbevangen mooie stem, bijvoorbeeld te horen in Miliama. Een ballade in de mandingo-traditie waar hij innemend zingt verhuld in een fraaie accordeon begeleiding en aangevuld met subtiel kora-spel. In Rencontre is de situatie omgekeerd. In dit instrumentale lied voert de Franse folk de boventoon, aangevuld met een kora-solo. Gevolgd door Deme Deme waar de stem van Cissoko rijkelijk, maar tegelijkertijd ook subtiel, wordt ondersteund door liggende accordeon-akkoorden. Het titelstuk is een verbroederlijke wals waar kora en accordeon beiden unisono om elkaar heen krullen en de melodie spelen. INSTANT is een fraaie debuut-CD van twee bevriende musici die door nieuwsgierigheid & vakkundigheid een tijdloze muzikale cohesie hebben ontwikkeld!

The Senegalese kora playerAblaye Cissok and the French accordionist Cyrille Brotto recorded a wonderful set on their album INSTANT.

The African double harp, the kora, is getting more popular in Western music. We already encountered the instrument at the AKA Trio, in a combination of kora, guitar and percussion. Or with the Flemish violinist Wouter Vandenabeele, together with Bao Sissoko. This includes the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, who recorded the album Transparant Water in 2017 with the kora player Seckou Keita. These are all wonderful examples where the kora is magically incorporated within the Western metier, larded with African influences.

We also encounter something similar on the magical album INSTANT by Ablaye Cissoko and Cyrille Brotto. Two musicians who are evenly matched. Two musicians who master their instruments and who can navigate effortlessly between Southern French folk and the Mandingo tradition from West Africa, where modality and polyrhythm are organic elements. Moreover, Ablaye Cissoko is an inspired singer with an uninhibited beautiful voice, which can be heard in Miliama for example. A ballad in the mandingo tradition where he sings captivatingly with beautiful accordion accompaniment, supplemented with subtle kora playing. In Rencontre it is the other way around. French folk predominate in this instrumental song, supplemented by a kora solo. Followed by Deme Deme where Cissoko’s voice is richly, but at the same time subtle, supported by layers of accordion chords. The title piece is a fraternal waltz where kora and accordion both play the melody in unison. INSTANT is the beautiful debut CD by two friends, two musicians who developed a timeless musical cohesion through curiosity & skill!
