Al jaren is de Italiaanse accordeonist Filippo Gambetta een vernieuwer binnen de folkmuziek. Hij gaf wereldwijd vele concerten en bracht inmiddels zes (solo)albums uit die qua vaardigheid aansluiten bij (de tarantella-accordeonist) Ambrogio Sparagna en natuurlijk de oud-gediende organetto-speler Ricardo Tesi. Sinds een aantal jaren heeft Gambetta zijn trio Maestrale met violist Sergio Caputo en pianist Fabio Vernizzi. Op hun nieuwe CD Circo Carnevale klinkt fraaie melodische folk met (noord)-Italiaanse, Franse en Ierse folk-kenmerken, aangelengd met jazz en klassieke muziek. Veel composities zijn van Filippo Gambetta met voortreffelijke thematiek, onverwachte wendingen (Bourrée du Caméléon), bijzondere harmonieën in Immanence en onregelmatige maatsoorten zoals in Gemma. Alle stukken klinken puur, ongezoet, fris en helder. Muziek met een blijmoedig karakter, circus-achtige chromatiek, vitale variaties en virtuoos gespeeld, met zelfs een knipoog naar J. S. Bach in Tris. Het trio Maestrale werd opgericht in 2017 en brengt met Circo Carnevale hun tweede album uit. Een album waar de muziek de lading van de hoes dekt: kleurrijk, speels en liefdevol!

On the album Circo Carnevale, the trio Maestrale presents an excellent exhibition of various folk dance music on piano, violin and organetto (diatonic button accordion).

For years, the Italian accordionist Filippo Gambetta has been an innovator in folk music. He gave many concerts worldwide and has released six (solo) albums that match with the music of (the tarantella accordionist) Ambrogio Sparagna and of course the veteran organetto player Ricardo Tesi. For several years Gambetta has had his trio Maestrale with violinist Sergio Caputo and pianist Fabio Vernizzi. Their new CD Circo Carnevale features beautiful melodic folk with (northern) Italian, French and Irish folk characteristics, mixed with jazz and classical music. Most of the compositions are by Filippo Gambetta with excellent themes, unexpected changes (Bourrée du Caméléon), special harmonies in Immanence and irregular time signatures such as in Gemma. All pieces sound pure, tight, fresh and clear. Music with a cheerful character, circus-like chromaticism, vital variations and virtuoso played, even with a link to J. S. Bach in Tris. The trio Maestrale was founded in 2017 and releases their second album Circo Carnevale. An album where the music sounds like the cover is drawn: colorful, playful and loving!
