Het ensemble Dionysos Now! zingt twee ‘vergeten’ missen van de Vlaamse componist Adriaan Willaert (1490 – 1562).

Adriaan Willaert is een componist die we niet heel veel tegenkomen binnen het klassieke (Renaissance) repertoire. Willaert studeerde in Parijs en vertrok op zijn 25ste naar Italië, waar hij werkte als componist in Rome en Ferrara en als zanger in Milaan. De laatste 35 jaar van zijn leven werkte hij in de San Marco van Venetië. Willaert is een vernieuwer in de muziek. Schreef werken voor twee orgels en voor twee koren, de zgn. cori spezzati. Deze nieuwe compositie-techniek kon hij naar hartelust uitproberen in de San Marco, waar twee koren vanuit de verschillende balkons ’tegen’ elkaar liet zingen, in een ongekende stereo-sensatie. Adriaan Willaert componeerde 150 motetten, vespers, psalmen en acht missen. Twee ervan zijn te vinden op de albums Adriano 1 en Adriano 2 van het ensemble Dionysos Now!

De Vlaamse tenor Tore Tom Denys is de initiator van het vocaal sextet Dionysos Now! Hij heeft zich ten doel gesteld minder bekende (en nooit eerder uitgebrachte) werken van Adriaan Willaert op vinyl te zetten. De twee a capella missen Mittit ad Virginem en Missa Sex Vocum Super Benedicta werden op de albums Adriano 1 en 2 vastgelegd. De uitvoeringen zijn van een ongekende schoonheid die niet alleen verwondert maar ook respect afdwingt. Bij vocale muziek, en zeker bij Renaissance vocale muziek, is de uitvoering ongelooflijk belangrijk. Het ensemble Dionysos Now! werkt met groot vakmanschap aan stemkleuring, intonatie, zuiverheid en het zeer spaarzame gebruik van vibrato. Hierdoor krijgt de muziek die serene lading die onmiskenbaar en ongelooflijk belangrijk is voor de Renaissance religieuze muziek. Het ensemble heeft een warme vocale mix waar countertenor, drie tenoren, bariton en bas elkaar feilloos  aanvullen en inkleuren. Een coherent geheel dat alleen kan ontstaan wanneer zangers hun vak verstaan, elkaar muzikaal aanvoelen en elkaar de ruimte durven te geven. Daarnaast hulde aan de opname-technici die Dionysos Now! optimaal hebben vastgelegd op dit wonderlijke vinyl. Hier zijn ware vakmensen aan het woord: eindeloos mooi!

The ensemble Dionysos Now! sings two ‘forgotten’ masses composed by the Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert (1490 – 1562).

Adriaan Willaert is a composer we don’t often encounter in the classical (Renaissance) repertoire. Willaert studied in Parijs and left for Italy when he was 25. He worked as a composer in Rome and Ferrara and as a singer in Milan. The last 35 years of his life he worked in the San Marco of Venice. Willaert was an innovator in music. He wrote compositions for two organs and for two choirs, the so called: cori spezzati. He was able to try out this new way of composing in the San Marco, where two choirs sang ’to’ each other from the different balconies, in an unprecedented stereo sensation. Adriaan Willaert composed 150 motets, vespers, psalms and eight masses. Two of them are recorder for the albums Adriano 1 and Adriano 2 by the ensemble Dionysos Now!

The Flemish tenor Tore Tom Denys is the initiator of the vocal sextet Dionysos Now! He has set himself the goal of putting lesser known (and previously unreleased) works by Adriaan Willaert on vinyl. The two a cappella Miss Mittit ad Virginem and Missa Sex Vocum Super Benedicta were captured on the albums Adriano 1 and 2. The performances are of an unprecedented beauty that not only commands amazement but also respect. With vocal music, and certainly with Renaissance vocal music, the performance is incredibly important. The ensemble Dionysos Now! works with great craftsmanship on voice coloring, intonation, purity and the very sparing use of vibrato. This gives the music that serene charge that is unmistakably and incredibly important for the Renaissance religious music. The ensemble has a warm vocal mix where countertenor, three tenors, baritone and bass complement and color each other flawlessly. Coherent music that can only be created when singers understand their profession, feel each other musically and give each other musical space. In addition, tribute to the recording engineers who Dionysos Now! optimally captured on this wonderful vinyl. True professionals are working here: endlessly beautiful!
