Viaggio in Italia is de titel van een muzikaal project van vier Italiaanse musici. Een CD vol aria’s, populaire liedjes en klassiekers uit de Italiaanse popmuziek.

Nummers naspelen en kopieëren is van alle tijden en van alle musici. Zo ook in de geïmproviseerde muziek. Begin jaren ’70 werd door een aantal Amerikaanse studenten The Real Book ontwikkeld. Een dik boek met een compilatie van uitgeschreven jazz-stukken. De melodie en de akkoorden van diverse stijlen werden verzameld en uitgegeven in C-, Bes- en Es-versies voor de diverse stemmingen van (blaas)instrumenten. Al jaren is deze Jazz-bijbel, hèt boek met verplichte jazz-stof voor Conservatoria en workshops. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan op het album Viaggio in Italia van bassist en keyboard-speler Gigi De Rienzo, saxofonist Marco Zurzolo, gitarist Carlo Fimiani en drummer Vittorio Riva. Vier Italiaanse musici die een selectie hebben gemaakt van melodieën uit het klassieke repertoire, die zo in het klassiek-Italiaanse-Real Book zouden kunnen staan, mocht het er ooit van komen. Zoals het openingsstuk Sempre Libera (uit La Traviata van Verdi), Vissi d’arts vissi d’amore (Puccini) met bevlogen sax solo of Una Furitiva lagrima (Donizetti) maar ook Napolitaanse stukken waaronder het geweldige Core ‘ngrato (met prachtige gitaarsolo) dat nog op het repertoire stond van de legendarische zangers Franco Corelli en Pavarotti. Alle stukken op Viaggio in Italia worden vanuit jazz-idioom gespeeld, waardoor het thema soms fraai verscholen ligt in het arrangement door het gebruik jazzakkoorden. Mede door de bezetting gitaar, sax, bas en drums krijgen deze thema’s een andere kleur, met als voordeel dat de thema’s, de melodieën, zich zullen nestelen in het oor van de luisteraar die wellicht niet (zo) bekend is met het klassieke repertoire. Na de gespeelde thema’s wordt er stevig en strak gesoleerd, door (vooral) sax en gitaar, in solo’s die virtuoos om de thematiek krullen en erop variëren. Gitaarwerk met een heldere sound, tremolo, chorus en wat reverb zowel elektrisch als akoestisch met af en toe een modaal uitstapje. De sax heeft een mooie, warme en verzorgde toon waarmee hij nogal scheurend kan uitpakken. Eigenaardig (en overbodig) is het gebruik van analoge strijkers (keyboard) in de arrangementen. Jammer genoeg verdwijnt hierdoor enigszins de transparantie en wordt de muziek onnodig zwaar. Maar dat maakt het album Viaggio in Italia niet minder de moeite waard. We horen hier vier bevlogen musici die met verve, originaliteit en op zeer eigen wijze klassiek repertoire uit Italië ten gehore brengen. Uit een land waar al eeuwen de melodie de basis is voor goede muziek!

Viaggio in Italia is the title of a musical project by four wonderful Italian musicians. A CD full of arias, popular songs and classics of Italian pop music.

Playing and copying songs is of all times and of all musicians. The same goes for improvised music. In the early 1970s, The Real Book was developed by a number of American students. A great book with a compilation of written jazz pieces. The melody and chords of various styles were collected and published in C, B flat and E flat versions for the various tunings of (wind) instruments. This Jazz Bible has been the book with mandatory jazz material for conservatories and workshops for years. We find something similar on the album Viaggio in Italia by bassist and keyboardist Gigi De Rienzo, saxophonist Marco Zurzolo, guitarist Carlo Fimiani and drummer Vittorio Riva. Four Italian musicians who have made a selection of melodies from the classical repertoire, which could easily be in the Classical-Italian-Real Book, if it ever happens. Such as the opening piece Semper Libera (from La Traviata by Verdi), Vissi d’arts vissi d’amore (Puccini) with inspired sax solo or Una Furitiva lagrima (Donizetti) with a lovely melancholic guitar solo. But also Neapolitan pieces are included, like the great Core ‘ngrato (with a beautiful guitar solo) that was in the repertoire of the legendary singers Franco Corelli and Pavarotti. All pieces on Viaggio in Italia are played from a jazz idiom, so that the theme is sometimes beautifully hidden in the arrangement through the use of jazz chords. Partly due to the guitar, sax, bass and drums, these themes get a different color, with the advantage that these melodies will settle in the ear of the listener who may not be (so) familiar with the classical repertoire. After the themes are played, there is a strong and tight soloing by (mainly) sax and guitar in solos that virtuoso curls around the theme and varies on it. Clear guitar sound with added tremolo, chorus and some reverb, both electric and acoustic with an occasional modal part. The sax has a beautiful, warm and tight sound with some heavy parts. Strange (and superfluous) is the use of analog strings (keyboard) in the arrangements. Unfortunately, the transparency disappears somewhat and the music becomes unnecessarily heavy. But that doesn’t make the album Viaggio in Italia any less worthwhile. Here we listen to four inspired musicians who perform classical repertoire from Italy with verve, originality and in their very own way. From a country where melody has been the basis for good music for centuries!
