Op het nieuwe album Celebrating Women van The Hague String Trio horen we schitterende muziek gecomponeerd door vier vrouwelijke componisten.

Het The Hague String Trio houdt van thema-CD’s. Zo was het album After the Darkness uit 2019 een ode aan Joodse componisten. Op de CD Celebrating Women wordt de schitterende muziek van vier bijzondere vrouwelijke componisten vertegenwoordigd: Miriam Hyde (1913-2005) uit Australië en Dame Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) uit Engeland die beiden een strijktrio schreven. De Nederlandse Emmy Frensel Wegener (1901-1973) componeerde een Suite voor viool, altviool en cello en Irene Britton Smith (1907-1938) uit Amerika schreef een Fuga.

Het uitgangspunt van het nieuwe album Celebrating Women van The Hague String Trio was de compositie: Strijktrio in D Op 6 uit 1884, gecomponeerd door Dame Ethel Smith. Een werk dat weliswaar was uitgegeven, maar waarvan geen opname te vinden was. Langzaamaan ontstond het idee om zélf een opname te maken van dit werk en dit aan te vullen met andere wereldpremières van vrouwelijke componisten uit de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw. Dat bleek een gouden greep, want Celebrating Women is een buitengewoon mooi album geworden. Er zijn geen ‘vergelijkingsopnames’, dus Justyna Briefjes, Julia Dinerstein en Miriam Kirby van het The Hague String Trio waren genoodzaakt zelf de muziek te ‘ontdekken’ en het een persoonlijk Haags-strijktrio-touché te geven.

Het openingswerk String Trio uit 1932 van Miriam Hyde heeft een warm en charmant timbre met een Post-Romantische uitstraling. Het werk bestaat uit 4 delen met duidelijke, thematische structuur. Het vierde deel, vivace, heeft daarnaast een innig landelijk en impressionistisch karakter. De Suite voor Strijktrio, het 2de werk, van Emmy Frensel Wegener is een luchtige 5-delige compositie, die ook gedurfd en avontuurlijk is. Korte delen, waarbij het vierde deel Andante: Dolce lieflijk homofoon en cantabile is, met fraaie ‘verborgen’ modulaties, om af te sluiten met het grillige Finale: Vivace Rigoroso possibile. De lange melodische lijnen schitteren aan de horizon bij het Allegro uit het 1ste deel van het Strijktrio in D op. 6 van Dame Ethel Smyth. Een strijdend componiste voor vrouwenrechten. Zij componeerde o.a. het strijdlied March of the Woman, dat het lijflied werd van de Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). De thematiek van haar Strijktrio wordt voortreffelijk gespeeld en smaakvol uitgekristalliseerd. Zeker het derde deel Adagio, dat door zijn gelaagdheid meerdere dimensies laat horen. De Fugue van Irene Britton Smith heeft een groot sferisch karakter, dat met lange legato melodielijnen een homofone solidariteit ten toon spreidt.

Het The Hague String Trio speelt deze vier wereldpremières met grote zeggingskracht. De uitvoeringen zijn een exposé van spelplezier, expressie en doorleefde empathie die met liefde en zorg wordt gebracht. Met Celebrating Women brengen ze niet alleen fantastische muziek, maar brengen ze ook een ode aan de vrouw: de moeder, de poëet, de strijder, de muzikante en natuurlijk: de componiste!

On the new album Celebrating Women by the The Hague String Trio there’s the excellent music, written by four female composers. This trio loves theme CDs. For example, the album After the Darkness from 2019 was an ode to Jewish composers. The album Celebrating Women represents great music of four wonderful female composers: Miriam Hyde (1913-2005) from Australia and Dame Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) from England, who both wrote a string trio. The Dutch Emmy Frensel Wegener (1901-1973) composed a Suite for violin, viola and cello and Irene Britton Smith (1907-1938) from America wrote a Fugue.

The starting point for this new album Celebrating Women was the composition: String Trio in D Op 6 from 1884, composed by Dame Ethel Smith. A work that had been published, but of which there was no recording. Slowly the idea arose to make a recording of this work and supplement it with other world premieres by female composers from the first half of the 20th century. That turned out to be a golden opportunity, because Celebrating Women has become an extremely beautiful album. There are no ‘comparison recordings’, so Justyna Briefjes, Julia Dinerstein and Miriam Kirby of the The Hague String Trio were forced to ‘discover’ the music themselves and give it their personal touché.

Miriam Hyde’s opening piece String Trio from 1932 has a warm and charming timbre with a Post-Romantic aura. The work consists of 4 parts with a clear, thematic structure. The fourth part, vivace, also has an intimately rural and impressionistic character. The Suite for String Trio, the 2nd work, by Emmy Frensel Wegener is a light-hearted 5-part composition, which is also daring and adventurous. Short pieces, in which the fourth movement Andante: Dolce is sweetly homophonic and cantabile, with beautiful ‘hidden’ modulations. The composition closes with the capricious Finale: Vivace Rigoroso possibile. The long melodic lines shine on the horizon in the Allegro from the 1st movement of the String Trio in D op. 6 by Dame Ethel Smyth. A composer who was also a fighter for women’s rights. She composed the battle song March of the Woman, which became the anthem of the Women’s Social and Political Union  (WSPU). The theme of her String Trio is beautifully played with tastefully crystallized. Certainly the third part Adagio, which shows several dimensions due to its layering. The last piece Fugue, by Irene Britton Smith, has a large spherical character, which displays a homophonic solidarity with long legato melody lines.

The The Hague String Trio plays these four world premieres with great expressiveness. The performances are an exposé of fun, expression and lively empathy, performed with love and care. With Celebrating Women they not only recorded fantastic music, but they also pay tribute to the woman: the mother, the poet, the fighter, the musician and of course: the composer!
