Norway is het prachtige live album van het Frans Elsen Septet met altsaxofonist Piet Noordijk. 50 jaar na opname is deze muziek voor het publiek beschikbaar, en dat is maar goed ook!

De jaren ’70 waren muzikaal zeer interessant. Een tijd waar musici op zoek gingen naar nieuwe wegen. Jazz-rock ontstond met giganten als Miles Davis met zijn legendarische album Bitches Brew (1970). Blazer Buddy Terry die met het album Pure Dynamite nog op zoek was naar de juiste vorm met o.a. een nog jonge drummer Lenny White en bassist Stanley Clarke, beiden net 20 jaar oud. Twee jaar later treffen we ze aan bij Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, nog zo’n fantastische jazz rock band. En natuurlijk pianist Herbie Hancock die met zijn albums Fat Albert Rotunda, Crossings en Mwandishi begin jaren ’70 een muzikale (bijna jazz-psychedelische) zoektocht maakte en startte met The Headhunters in ’73.

In Nederland was het o.a. pianist Frans Elsen (1934 – 2011) die op zoek ging naar the funky-way-of-jazz. Een echte be-bop-gigant die in ’52 optrad met saxofonist Don Byas, destijds  pas 18 jaar oud. Hij gaf concerten met grote Amerikaanse jazz-musici: o.a. Oliver Nelson, Donald Byrd, Ben Webster, Woody Shaw en Chet Baker.

Een vakantie in Noorwegen in de zomer van 1970, inspireerde hem om een Noorse cyclus te componeren. Twaalf Noorse plaatsen werden door Frans Elsen muzikaal vertaald en uitgevoerd door o.a. saxofonist Ferdinand Povel, gitarist Wim Overgaauw, basgitaristen Rob Langereis en Victor Kaihatu, drummer Eric Ineke en percussionist Wim van der Beek. De stukken zijn glooiend, energiek, funky en voor die tijd, begin jaren ’70, bijzonder origineel. Strakke muziek, met grote spontaniteit, gelardeerd met voortreffelijke solo’s. Elsen speelt op de elektrische Fender Rhodes piano die met zijn markante aanslag uiterst geschikt is voor deze funky jazz (soms aangevuld met wah-wah pedaal). Op Norway staan studiowerken en live-opnames van Int. Jazz Fest. Loosdrecht en opnames uit Theater Pepijn in Den Haag. Fantastisch werk van het Nederlands Jazzarchief, dat verantwoordelijk is voor het uitbrengen van deze inspirerende opnames en ze dus beschikbaar maakte. Frans zou er blij mee zijn geweest en wij zijn trots op deze geweldige muzikant!

Norway is a beautiful live album by the Frans Elsen Septet with alto saxophonist Piet Noordijk. 50 years after these recordings, they are now available to the public, and that’s great!

The 1970s were musically very interesting. A time when musicians were looking for new paths. Jazz-rock originated with giants like Miles Davis with his legendary album Bitches Brew (1970). Saxophonist Buddy Terry who was still looking for the right form with his album Pure Dynamite with, among others, a still young drummer Lenny White and bassist Stanley Clarke. Both just 20 years old. We met them 2 years later in Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, another great jazz-rock band. And of course pianist Herbie Hancock who made a musical (almost jazz-psychedelic) quest with his albums Fat Albert Rotunda, Crossings and Mwandishi in the early 1970s and started The Headhunters in ’73.

In the Netherlands it was pianist Frans Elsen (1934 – 2011) who went in search of the funky way of jazz. A real be-bop giant who performed in ’52 with saxophonist Don Byas. He was only 18 years old at the time. He gave concerts with great American jazz musicians: among others Oliver Nelson, Donald Byrd, Ben Webster, Woody Shaw and Chet Baker.

A holiday in Norway inspired him to compose a Norwegian cycle in the summer of 1970. Twelve Norwegian places were musically translated by Frans Elsen and played by saxophonist Ferdinand Povel, guitarist Wim Overgaauw, bass players Rob Langereis and Victor Kaihatu, drummer Eric Ineke and percussionist Wim van der Beek. The pieces are sloping, energetic, funky and for the time, early 1970s, extremely original. Tight music, with great spontaneity larded with excellent solos. Elsen plays the electric Fender Rhodes piano, which with its striking touch is extremely suitable for this funky jazz. Norway features studio works and live recordings at the Int. Jazzfest. Loosdrecht and recordings from Theater Pepijn in The Hague. Fantastic work by the Dutch Jazz Archive, which is responsible for the release of these inspiring recordings and made them available for the audience. Frans would have been happy about it and we are proud of of this wonderful musician!
