De muziek van Anna Tam bezit een prachtige, sobere schoonheid. Muziek waar locatie en tijd op subtiele wijze verdampen en je wordt meegevoerd, terug naar de Middeleeuwen. We kwamen Anna Tam al tegen bij de groep Mediæval Bæbes en het trio Wilde Roses, maar op haar solo-debuut Anchoress staat ze er bijna alleen voor en begeleidt ze zichzelf op cello, nyckelharpa (Zweedse druktoetsenviool), viola da gamba, draailier en percussie. In de meeste stukken hoor je alleen haar kristalheldere stem met ingetogen eenstemmige-begeleiding. Een begeleiding die met uitgekiende harmonie haar stem aanvult en ondersteunt, met één harmonische tweede toon. Dit geeft de muziek een enorme diepgang, waar je echt even stil van wordt. Slechts in één stuk horen we op banjo Roy Chilton en in een ander lied de viool van Geffrey Irwin. Anna Tam zingt traditionele stukken, overwegend in het Engels. Deze zijn fraai gearrangeerd en opgebouwd waar stem en instrument elkaar zo nu en dan afwisselen. Op Anchoress staan twee instrumentale stukken: Fairy Boat Hornpipe en de afsluiter The Goblet. Fascinerend hoe muziek, die is teruggebracht tot de absolute essentie, tot de pure kern, je zó kan raken!

When you listen to the music of Anna Tam from her album Anchoress, time stands still for a moment and you are carried away in a timeless metamorphosis.

Anna Tam’s music has a wonderful, sober beauty. Music where location and time subtly evaporate and you are transported back to the Middle Ages. We already met Anna Tam at the Mediæval Bæbes and the trio Wilde Roses. On her solo debut Anchoress she is almost alone and accompanies herself on cello, nyckelharpa (Swedish keyboard violin), viola da gamba, hurdy-gurdy and percussion. In most pieces you only hear her crystal clear voice with subdued single-voiced string instrument. An accompaniment that complements and sustains her voice with sophisticated harmony, with only one harmonic second tone. This gives the music an enormous depth, which really makes you quiet for a while. Only in one piece there’s Roy Chilton on banjo and Geffrey Irwin’s plays violin in another song. Anna Tam sings traditional pieces, mainly in English. These are beautifully arranged and constructed where voice and instrument alternate every now and then. But Anchoress also contains two instrumental pieces: Fairy Boat Hornpipe and the closing track The Goblet. Fascinating that music, reduced to the absolute essence, to the pure core, can touch you like this music does. Really excellent!
