Galicië, noord Spanje, is niet alleen een bijzonder stukje Europa voor de Galicische folk maar er komt ook bijzondere jazz vandaan door Sumrrá; een trio van piano, bas en drums.

Het trio Sumrrá zijn drie musici uit Santiago de Compostela (in het noorden van Spanje) die al meer dan 20 jaar een trio vormen: pianist Manuel Gutierrez, bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo en drummer L.A.R. Legido. Met zes albums en honderden concerten manifesteren deze drie muzikanten zich in een metier van improvisatie met een grote mate van vrijheid. Op hun zevende album 7 Visions, onderzoeken ze op muzikale wijze het ontstaan van de mens, zo’n 13.700 jaar geleden. Of dat onderzoek geslaagd is, is moeilijk te zeggen maar het brengt wel mooie, interessante en bevlogen muziek. Fraai hoe piano-, bas- en drumspel al improviserend zich hecht in elkaar vlechten tot strakke muziek. Improvisaties die vooral gebaseerd zijn op uitgestrekte akkoord-thema’s, met veel arpeggio’s en pittige basthema’s, al dan niet unisono gespeeld met de piano-linkerhand en de contrabas. Gevolgd door markante soli van de drie leden. Pianist Manuel Gutierrez valt op door zijn melodische aanpak, waarbij zijn improvisaties zich zorgvuldig krullen om de harmonieën. Bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo gebruikt een strakke speelwijze waarmee hij moeiteloos duo-soleert met het klavier zoals bij voorbeeld in Periferia Universal. Drummer L.A.R. Legido maakt gebruik van ‘vierkante’ ritmes, die de muziek een enorme drive geven. Hij laat zijn trommels het verhaal vertellen zoals we dat ook tegenkwamen bij de grote Art Blakey. Ook Blakey gebruikte de ritmes en timbres van de trommels om ritmische en vooral ‘melodisch’ de improvisaties te verfraaien. Sumrrá is een uniek trio waarbij het lijkt alsof ze hun muziek, hun composities ter plekke bedenken, ter plekke improviserend creëren. Hierdoor word je als luisteraar meegenomen in spontaan muzikaal-verhaal, dat je echt meer dan een keer wilt horen. En dat is heerlijk!

Galicia, northern Spain, is not only a special part of Europe for Galician folk, but also a place for the special jazz trio Sumrrá; a trio of piano, bass and drums. 

The trio Sumrrá are three musicians from Santiago de Compostela (in the north of Spain) that have formed a trio, more than 20 years ago: pianist Manuel Gutierrez, bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo and drummer L.A.R. Legido. With six albums and hundreds of concerts, these three musicians manifest themselves in a metier of improvisation with a great deal of freedom. On their seventh album 7 Visions they musically explore the origin of mankind, some 13,700 years ago. It is difficult to say whether this research has been successful, but it does produce beautiful, interesting and inspired music. Splendid how piano, bass and drum playing intertwine while improvising into tight music. Improvisations that are mainly based on wide chord themes, with many arpeggios and spicy bass themes, whether or not played in unison with the piano-left hand and the double bass. Followed by striking solos by the three members. Pianist Manuel Gutierrez stands out for his melodic approach, in which his improvisations carefully curl around the harmonies. Bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo uses a tight playing style with which he effortlessly performs a duo solo with piano, as in Periferia Universal for example. Drummer L.A.R. Legido uses ‘square’ and straight rhythms, that gives the music an enormous drive. He lets his drums sound tell the story, as we also encountered with the great Art Blakey. He also used the rhythms and the timbre of the drums to create a rhythmic and above all to enhance the ‘melodic’ improvisation. Sumrrá is a unique trio where it seems as if they invent their music, their compositions on the spot. As a listener, you are taken into a spontaneous musical story that you really want to hear more than once. And that’s absolutely great!
