Wat doe je als de drummer van je trio vanwege de pandemie niet mee kan optreden? Dan doe je het zonder drummer. Dat is precies wat pianist en artistiek directeur van het Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival Jan Lundgren dacht. Samen met sopraansaxofonist Emile Parisien en contrabassist Lars Danielsson vormt hij nu een nieuw trio dat een geweldig concert gaf tijdens het Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, augustus ’20. De live-opnames van dit concert zijn uitgebracht op Into the Night.

Jan Lundgren, Emile Parisien & Lars Danielsson zijn drie musici die op dezelfde melodische golflengte zitten. Jan Lundgren heeft een voorliefde voor sprankelende melodieën die hij virtuoos vertolkt. Zoals te horen in zijn compositie A Dog named Jazz waar het lijkt alsof zijn spel om-de-melodie-heen danst, met een opmerkelijke linkerhand. In zijn werk Into the Night zijn het de gemêleerde harmonieën die de nacht zijn warme karakter bezorgt. Lundgren heeft een doortastend touché waardoor zijn spel sereen en zelfverzekerd overkomt. Iets soortgelijks vind je terug bij meester-contrabassist Lars Danielsson. Een musicus die zo fraai gebruik maakt van akkoord-omkeringen, zoals je die ook tegenkomt in klassieke of religieuze muziek. Werkelijk schitterend in Asta. Kristalheldere muziek die voortreffelijk wordt uitgevoerd. Fraai zijn hierin de variaties van Parisien die met de sopraansax doortastend om de melodie heen cirkelt. Emile Parisien heeft een karakteristieke, lyrische manier van spelen waarin hij soms gebruik maakt van korte glissandi waarmee hij subtiel naar de toon glijdt. Op het album Into the Night staan eigen werken maar ook het opmerkelijke Schubertauser. Een stuk van de accordeonist Vincent Peirani, die met een grote knipoog de stijl van de Duitse componist Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) onder de loep neemt en transformeert naar de 21ste eeuw. Mooi zijn hierin de simultaan uitgevoerde inventieve variaties op piano, sopraansax en contrabas. Weergaloos. Into the Night werd onder moeilijke omstandigheden opgenomen: plotselinge verandering van bezetting en slechts één repetitie-dag. Als het dan ook nog lukt om zo’n kwaliteits-CD op te nemen met zulke fantastische muziek, dan getuigt dat van lef en vakmanschap!

The live recorded trio CD Into the Night by Lundgren, Parisien & Danielsson has a remarkable tonal freshness that only Scandinavians can.

What do you do if the drummer of your trio cannot perform because of the pandemic? Then you play without a drummer… That is exactly what pianist and artistic director of the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival Jan Lundgren thought. Together with soprano saxophonist Emile Parisien and double bassist Lars Danielsson, he formed a new trio that gave a great concert during the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, August ’20 . The live recordings of this concert have now been released on the album Into the Night.

Jan Lundgren, Emile Parisien & Lars Danielsson are three awesome musicians who are on the same melodic wavelength. Jan Lundgren has a predilection for sparkling melodies that he performs in a virtuoso way. Like in his composition A Dog named Jazz, where it seems as if his piano notes are dancing around the melody, with a remarkable left hand. The mixed harmonies in his work Into the Night give the night its warm character. Lundgren has a resolute touch that makes his playing seem serene and confident. Something similar can be found with master double bassist Lars Danielsson. A musician who makes such beautiful use of chord inversions, which are also used in classical or religious music. Truly beautiful in Asta. Crystal clear music performed superbly. Beautiful are the variations of Parisien, who vigorously circles around the melody with the soprano sax. Emile Parisien has a characteristic and lyrical way of playing in which he sometimes uses short glissandi with which he slides subtly towards the tone. The album Into the Night contains own works composed by Lundgren, Parisien & Danielsson, but also the special piece Schubertauser, composed by the accordionist Vincent Peirani, in which he adapts the style of the German composer Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) to the 21st century. Beautiful are the simultaneously performed inventive variations on piano, soprano sax and double bass. The album Into the Night was recorded under difficult circumstances: a sudden change of line-up and only one rehearsal day. If you in these circumstances also manages to record a quality CD with fantastic music…this shows guts and craftsmanship!
