Tegen een klassieke achtergrond levert de Italiaanse accordeonist en componist Claudio Prima een kleurrijk scala af met muziek uit Salento op zijn album Enjoy.

De Italiaanse singer/songwriter Claudio Prima kwamen we al eerder tegen in BandAdriatica. Een feestorkest dat onder leiding van Prima stevig voortborduurt op de banda-, de blaas-muziektraditie, van Italië. Op zijn nieuwe CD Enjoy horen we hem met het strijkkwartet Seme en percussionist Vito De Lorenzi. De muziek balanceert op de rand van folk (uit Salento), klassieke muziek en volksmelodieën. Claudio Prima bespeelt de organetto; de diatonische accordeon. Een type accordeon met een lange Italiaanse traditie die veel wordt gebruikt voor het spelen van de tarantella. De opzwepende 6/8ste dans uit Salento, de ‘hak van de laars’, in het zuiden van Italië. Het instrument heeft een heel eigen klankkleur die mede wordt veroorzaakt door de wijze van spelen, waarbij er steeds een andere toon klinkt als je trekt of duwt aan de balg. Zoals bij de bandoneon of de mondharmonica, waar de toonhoogte ook verandert als je zuigt of blaast. Dat geeft het instrument zijn karakteristieke klankkleur. Claudio Prima is een virtuoos op de organetto. Op Enjoy staat het instrument centraal en vleit het zich organisch tussen de 4 strijkers van het strijkkwartet. Gecomponeerde muziek met een groot filmisch karakter. Stuwende tremolo-passages, fraaie chromatiek en een enkele keer pulserende ritmische patronen waardoor het werk ook kenmerken heeft van Minimal-Music, met een knipoog naar Michael Nyman. Op Enjoy staan ook enkele vocale stukken waarvan Nina de meest opvallende is. Een lied over dansen tot het eind van de wereld; een schitterende melodische waltz, met fraaie verstopte chromatiek. Enjoy is een album dat zijn naam eer aandoet: want genieten is het zeer zeker!

We met the Italian singer/songwriter Claudio Prima before in the band BandAdriatica. A party orchestra that, under the direction of Prima, builds solidly on the banda, brass, tradition of Italy. On his new CD Enjoy you can hear him with the string quartet Seme and percussionist Vito De Lorenzi. The music balances on the edge of folk (from Salento), classical music and folk melodies. Claudio Prima plays the organetto; the diatonic accordion. A type of accordion with a long Italian tradition that is widely used for playing the tarantella. The exciting 6/8th dance from Salento, in the south of Italy. The instrument has its own timbre that is partly due to the way it is played, where a different tone sounds when you pull or push the bellows. Like the bandoneon or the harmonica, where the pitch also changes when you suck or blow. This gives the instrument its wonderful characteristic timbre. Claudio Prima is a virtuoso on the organetto. On the album Enjoy the organetto is the centre and the instrument flatters itself organically between the 4 strings of the string quartet. Composed music with a great cinematic character. Driving tremolo passages, beautiful chromaticism and sometimes recurring rhythmic patterns, so that the work also has characteristics of Minimal-Music, with a characteristics of Michael Nyman’s music. This CD also features some vocal songs of which Nina is the most notable. A song about dancing until the end of the world; a beautiful melodic waltz, with kind of hidden chromaticism. Enjoy is an album that lives up to its name: because it is certainly enjoyable!
