Zangeres Fely Tchaco brengt met haar energieke album Yita een ode aan al die (Afrikaanse) migranten die hun leven verloren in de Middellandse Zee, op zoek naar een beter leven.

Fely Tchaco werd geboren in Ivoorkust, maar woont sinds 2000 in San Francisco. Na veel optredens met het zingen van Franse chansons in bars en restaurants, neemt ze in 1996 haar debuut-album Amour Perdu op met populaire Franse liedjes. Niet zo  vreemd natuurlijk want, naast lokale talen, is Frans de voertaal in Ivoorkust dat tot 1960 een Franse kolonie was. Eenmaal in Amerika neemt ze de CD’s De Zere Gnan en Maturite op, waar nu dus haar nieuwe, prachtige album Yita (Deep Water) aan wordt toegevoegd. Een CD die ze opdraagt aan de migranten die stierven in de Middellandse Zee. Ze zingt in Frans, Engels en haar moedertaal Gouro dat veelal wordt gesproken in streek van de Bandama Rivier in het zuiden van Ivoorkust. Fely Tchaco is naast zangeres ook kunstenares, mode-ontwerper en componiste van alle liedjes op haar nieuwe album Yita (Deep Water). Op geraffineerde wijze combineert zij de ritmes van de West-Afrikaanse bosregio’s zoals Gbegbe, Gaou Alloukou en Zaouli met pop, rock en (Afro)-jazz. Een aanpak die zeer opzwepend en inspirerend werkt, niet in de laatste plaats door de voortreffelijke meezingbare melodieën. Liedjes met arrangementen die van de ene kant uitpuilen van de Afrikaanse ritmes, met schitterende polyfone vocalen in voor- en nazang. Aan de andere kant horen we strakke pop en (Afro)-jazz die stevig verweven zit in (elektronische) ritmes, synthesizers en blazers. Fely Tchaco wordt bijgestaan door een band met drummer/percussionist Abou Diarraassouba en Tim Hager en gitarist Jeff Simon. Haar stemgeluid roept herinnering op aan Angelique Kidjo. Een zangeres uit Benin die in Nederland doorbrak met haar CD Ayé (1994) en o.a. samenwerkte met jazzpianist Jasper van ’t Hof. Deep Water is een voortreffelijk album van een multi-talent Fely Tchaco waarvan we nog veel zullen horen!

With her energetic album Yita, singer Fely Tchaco pays a tribute to all those (African) migrants who lost their lives in the Mediterranean in search of a better life.

Fely Tchaco was born in Ivory Coast, but has lived in San Francisco since 2000. After many appearances singing French chansons in bars and restaurants, she recorded her debut album Amour Perdu with popular French songs in 1996. Not that strange, of course, because, in addition to local languages, French is the official language in Ivory Coast, which was a French colony until 1960. Once in America, she recorded the CDs De Zere Gnan and Maturite to which her new beautiful album Yita (Deep Water) is now added. This CD is dedicated to all migrants who died in the Mediterranean. She sings in French, English and her native language Gouro, which is mostly spoken in the Bandama River region in the south of Ivory Coast. In addition to being a singer, Fely Tchaco is also an artist, fashion designer and composer of all the songs on her new album Yita (Deep Water). She cleverly combines the rhythms of the West African forest regions such as Gbegbe, Gaou Alloukou and Zaouli with pop, rock and (Afro) jazz. An approach that is very exciting and inspiring, not least because of the excellent sing-along melodies. Her songs are arranged on  one hand bulge with African rhythms with beautiful polyphonic vocals in call- and respond-singing. On the other hand, we hear tight pop and (Afro) jazz that is firmly intertwined in (electronic) rhythms, synthesizers and horns. Fely Tchaco is assisted by a band with drummers / percussionists Abou Diarraassouba and Tim Hager and guitarist Jeff Simon. Her voice evokes memory of Angelique Kidjo. A singer from Benin who became famous in the Netherlands with her CD Ayé (1994) and her collaboration with the Dutch jazz pianist Jasper van ’t Hof, among others. Deep Water is an excellent album by a wonderful multi-talented musician Fely Tchaco, which you will keep in mind!
