Atlas is de titel van de bijzondere CD van multi-snarenspeler Efrén López en ney-speler Chrístos Barbas. Een muzikale vertelling van Ottomaanse en Middeleeuwse muziek, die wordt uitgevoerd in een transparante aanpak van muzikale tijd en ruimte.

Beiden musici kennen elkaar al bijna twee decennia. Nu in 2021, verschijnt hun debuut-duo-album Atlas. Een prachtige, sferische en uiterst muzikale vertelling in een landschap van Ottomaanse (Turkse) en Middeleeuwse muziek. Op een compositie na, schreven Efrén López en Chrístos Barbas alle werken. Open en heldere stukken, waar tijd, ruimte, stilte en meditatie voortdurend aanwezig zijn. De muziek straalt rust uit, zelfs in de wat snellere werken, zoals Kürdi Pesrev, waar de ney zich moeiteloos vleit langs de snelle tonen van de rabab (Afghaans snaarinstrument). Thema’s worden veelal unisono gespeeld op diverse snaarinstrumenten zoals de oud (Arabische luit), de rabab, de fretloze gitaar en de ney. De hese Turkse fluit die, door zijn weemoedige klank, erg mooi mengt met het strakke spel van de snaarinstrumenten. Bijzonder is Perasma, waar de fluit wonderschoon kleurt met de rabab in een unisono gespeelde melodie. Fraai is ook het instrumentale lied Ben voorga, sisser poges, geschreven door de Franse troubadour Guiraut de Tholoza, midden 13de eeuw. In de tijd dat de troubadours en trouvères actief waren in Occitanië, het zuiden van Frankrijk. Chrístos Barbas speelt met verve de melodie op de ney, alsof hij zingt door zijn instrument, dat strelend wordt omlijst door het spel van Efrén López op de gitaar. Deze musici begrijpen elkaar, begrijpen de muziek, hun aanpak en de open en transparante arrangementen. Ze geven elkaar alle ruimte om de composities te laten ademen en de luisteraar mee te nemen naar eeuwenoude muziekgeschiedenis die de tegenwoordige tijd even laat stilstaan. Weergaloos!

Atlas is the title of the special CD by multi-string player Efrén López and ney player Chrístos Barbas. A musical story of Ottoman and Medieval music performed in a transparent approach of time and space.

Both musicians have known each other for almost two decades. Now in 2021, their debut duo album Atlas is released. A beautifully atmospheric, highly musical story in a landscape of Ottoman (Turkish) and Medieval music. Except for one composition, Efrén López and Chrístos Barbas wrote all the works. Open and clear pieces, where time, space, silence and meditation are constantly present. The music radiates calm, even in the faster works, such as Kürdi Pesrev, where the ney effortlessly flatters itself along the fast tones of the rabab (Afghan stringed instrument). Themes are often played in unison on various stringed instruments such as the oud (Arabic lute), the rabab, the fretless guitar and the ney. The hoarse Turkish flute that, due to its melancholic sound, blends very nicely with the tight playing of the stringed instruments. Particularly in Perasma, where the flute colors beautifully with the rabab melody played in unison. Also great is the instrumental song Ben voorga, sisser poges, written by the French troubadour Guiraut de Tholoza, mid 13th century.
