In 2017 nam het duo van de Nederlandse (van Engelse afkomst) violist Daniel Rowland en de Oekraïense pianiste Natacha Kudritskaya een enerverend album op met werken van de Roemeense componist George Enescu. Op hun laatste CD A French Connection speelt het duo werken van drie Franse componisten. Alleen al het openingswerk (met strijkkwartet) Concert for Violin, Piano & String Quartet van Ernest Chausson (zo’n 40 minuten) is van een ongekende schoonheid. Chausson, die in 1899 (44 jaar oud) tragisch om het leven kwam, belicht in zijn Concert alle kanten van de menselijke ziel. De muziek kolkt, bruist, weent en huilt en wordt weergaloos uitgevoerd door Daniel Rowland en pianiste Natacha Kudritskaya en strijkkwartet. De diepe melancholie en romantiek klinkt zo breed dat je het gevoel krijgt dat je naar een orkest luistert. Vooral in het vierde, het laatste, deel Très animé wordt je meezogen in een achtbaan van doortastende dynamiek die je zo nu en dan naar adem doet snakken. De drie Preludes van Debussy, die dan volgen, zijn van origine gecomponeerd voor 2 piano’s en bewerkt voor viool en piano door Craig White. De Preludes zijn een coherent samenspel tussen viool en piano met als hoogtepunt La Puerta del Vino waar heel subtiel de Spaanse flamenco in wordt weerspiegeld. Het album wordt afgesloten met de bekende Viool Sonate in A van Cesar Franck, die overigens een van de leermeesters was van Ernest Chausson. A French Connection is een voortreffelijk album waarin je moeiteloos wordt betoverd in doorleefde en bevlogen uitvoeringen. Een van de beste klassieke CD’s van de laatste tijd!

A French Connection is a beautiful record by violinist Daniel Rowland and pianist Natacha Kudritskaya who play compositions by Claude Debussy, Cesar Franck and Ernest Chausson (with string quartet).

In 2017, the duo of the Dutch (of English descent) violinist Daniel Rowland and the Ukrainian pianist Natacha Kudritskaya recorded an exciting album with works by the Romanian composer George Enescu. On their latest CD A French Connection, the duo recorded works by three French composers. The opening piece (with string quartet) Concert for Violin, Piano & String Quartet by Ernest Chausson (about 40 minutes) is of an unprecedented beauty. This brilliant composer was tragically killed in 1899 (44 years old). In his Concert he sheds light on all sides of the human soul. The music swirls, fizzes, cries and shouts and is uniquely performed by Daniel Rowland and pianist Natacha Kudritskaya and string quartet. The deep melancholy and romance sounds so broad that you get the feeling that you are listening to an orchestra. Especially in the fourth, and last, part Très animé you are in a rollercoaster of thorough dynamics that makes you gasp for breath now and then. The three Preludes by Debussy, that follow, were originally composed for 2 pianos and arranged for violin and piano by Craig White. The Preludes are a wonderful and coherent interplay between violin and piano, culminating in La Puerta del Vino, which subtly reflects the Spanish flamenco. The album closes with the famous Violin Sonata in A by Cesar Franck, who was one of Ernest Chausson’s teachers by the way. A French Connection is an excellent album in which you are effortlessly enchanted and inspired by great performances. This in one of the best classical records I heard lately!
