De muziek uit Madagaskar heeft vaak een snelle polyritmische ritmiek. Dat komen we tegen in de muziek van Rajery, die de valiha (buiszither) bespeelt en bij de virtuose accordeonist Regiz Gizavo (1959-2017), die in zijn eentje een heel orkest toverde uit zijn gigantische accordeon. Deze verbluffende snelheid vinden we ook terug op het album Ala Maintso. Gitarist Modeste Hugues (Randiamahitsoa) is een veelzijdig muzikant die toerde o.a. met Cesaria Evora (1941-2011), morna zangeres uit Kaap Verdië. Hij bestudeerde de muziek uit zijn geboortestad Betroka in het zuiden van Madagascar die hij nu verwerkt in zijn composities. Kilema die uit Toliara (in het Zuid-westen van Madagaskar) komt, bouwde zijn eigen marovany. Een citer die vergelijkbaar is met de kantele zoals we ook tegenkomen in Baltische Staten en Zweden. Een rechthoekige doos, bespannen met 12 snaren aan beiden zijden waardoor er heel snel (met beiden handen) op kan worden getokkeld. Samen met Modeste Hugues vormt Kilema een rijk snaren-duo. Alhoewel er maar twee instrumenten klinken, is de muziek ongelooflijk vol van klank en polyritmisch complex. Boven deze virtuoze snaren-snelheid zingen ze met een lichte fluisterstem en gebruiken ze de katsa (shaker). De teksten behandelen maatschappelijke thema’s als zelfontplooiing, eigen keuzes maken, werken, zorgen voor je omgeving en religie. De CD Ala Maintso (Groene Wereld) is een buitengewoon fraai exposé van het muzikale erfgoed uit Madagaskar. Puur, eerlijk en virtuoos gespeeld.

Ala Maintso is the name of the album of the two musicians Modeste Hugues and Kilema from Madagascar. Twinkling songs played on guitar and the marovany, the Madagascar zither.

The music of Madagascar often has a fast polyrhythmic rhythm. We encounter this in the music of Rajery who plays the valiha (kind of tube zither) and in the virtuoso accordionist Regiz Gizavo (1959-2017), who single-handedly conjured an entire orchestra from his gigantic accordion. This astonishing musical speed can also be found on the album Ala Maintso. Guitarist Modeste Hugues (Randiamahitsoa) is a versatile musician who has toured with Cesaria Evora (1941-2011), morna singer from Cape Verde. He studied the music from his hometown Betroka in the south of Madagascar that he now incorporates in his compositions. Kilema who comes from the city Toliara (in the south-west of Madagascar) built his own marovany. A zither as we also encounter in the Baltic States and Sweden. A rectangular box, strung with 12 strings on both sides, so that it can be plucked very quickly with both hands. Together with Modeste Hugues, Kilema forms a rich string duo. Although there are only two instruments, the music is incredibly polyrhythmically complex and full of sound. Above this virtuoso string speed they sing with a light whispering voice and use the katsa (shaker). The lyrics are about social themes such as self-development, making your own choices, working, taking care of your environment and religion. The album Ala Maintso (Green World) is an exceptionally beautiful recording on which the musical heritage of Madagascar is played virtuoso, with love and care.
