Op het nieuwe album Sly Fly van saxofonist Iman Spaargaren horen we de EyeMan All-Stars in heerlijk laid back gespeelde 70-er jaren jazz-soul-funk stukken. Alle composities werden door Spaargaren geschreven, op Witch Hunt na dat Wayne Shorter in 1966 componeerde voor zijn legendarische LP Speak no Evil. Iman Spaargaren componeerde pakkende melodieën die verdraaid goed in het gehoor liggen. Catchy thema’s met strakke ritmiek, mooie breaks, accuraat en met zorg uitgevoerd door pianist Dirk Balthaus, contrabassist Hendrik Müller en drummer Efraïm Schulz-Wackerbarth. Saxofonist Spaargaren heeft de sax-sound van Charles Lloyd en hier en daar de dubbele timing van Charlie Parker. Zijn spel is soepel en beweeglijk. Hij laveert met gemak door het ritmisch en harmonisch landschap van zijn EyeMan All-Stars. Alle musici komen ruimschoots aan bod. Zo horen we een karakteristieke bassolo in Sly Fly waar Müller fraai het thema omspeelt en laat resoneren in de warme klanken van de contrabas. Drummer Schulz schittert in Witch Hunt met een verrassende drumsolo die tegen het polyritmische aanleunt en ‘danst’ over de ferme accenten van bas en piano. Pianist Dirk Balthaus is de lyricus van het viertal. Hij kiest zorgvuldig zijn notenmateriaal en creëert (net zoals Iman) nieuwe melodieën en thematische variaties in zijn solo’s. We horen hem op Fender Rhodes en akoestisch piano. Ontegenzeglijk klinkt het timbre van Herbie Hancock door in zijn spel. Sly Fly is een groovy album met opgewekte stukken die met verve worden gespeeld. Een wijze van musiceren die altijd welkom is, maar in deze onzekere Corona-tijd zorgt voor een ware opkikker!

The new album Sly Fly by saxophonist Iman Spaargaren and the EyeMan All-Stars is full of wonderful laid back played 70’s jazz-soul-funk pieces. All compositions were written by Spaargaren, except for Witch Hunt which Wayne Shorter composed in 1966 for his legendary LP Speak no Evil. Iman Spaargaren composed very catchy melodies. Great themes with tight rhythm, beautiful breaks, performed accurately by pianist Dirk Balthaus, double bassist Hendrik Müller and drummer Efraïm Schulz-Wackerbarth. Saxophonist Spaargaren sounds like Charles Lloyd and here and there the double timing of Charlie Parker. His playing is smooth and dynamic. He navigates with ease through the rhythmic and harmonic landscape of his EyeMan All-Stars. All musicians play great solo’s. For example, we hear a characteristic bass solo in Sly Fly. Inventive how Müller variates the theme in the warm sound of the double bass. Drummer Schulz shines in Witch Hunt with a surprising drum solo that leans against the polyrhythmic and ‘dances’ over the firm accents of bass and piano. Pianist Dirk Balthaus is the lyricist of the foursome. He carefully chooses his notes and creates (like Iman) new melodies and thematic variations in his solos. We hear him on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano. The timbre of Herbie Hancock is undeniably reflected in his playing. Sly Fly is a groovy album with cheerful pieces played with verve. A way of making music that is always great, but in these uncertain Corona times, it provides a real boost!
