In 2020 bracht het Zwitsers ensemble La Boz Galana het schitterende album Los ecos de Manzanares uit. Een CD met muziek uit het Spanje van de 17de eeuw, uitgevoerd door 2 sopranen, countertenor, baritone onder begeleiding van barok-gitaar en harp.

Het ensemble La Boz Galana put voor hun album Los ecos de Manzanares uit het Cancionero de la Sablonara. Een liedboek met 75 polyfone liederen die werden gecomponeerd in de eerste helft van de 17de eeuw aan het hof in Madrid. Deze liederen worden ook wel de tonos humanos genoemd of seculiere polyfone liederen. Melodieën die bekend waren in die tijd. Een brand in 1734 verwoestte veel liedboeken maar het Cancionero de la Sablonara bleef gespaard omdat het tijdens de brand niet in Spanje was. Dat maakt de liederen extra bijzonder en nog belangrijker. De koning van Spanje, Philip IV, was een groot muziek- en dansliefhebber. Hij gaf componist Alvaro de los Rios (1580-1623) de opdracht om het Casa de Sus Altezas (Huis van de Hoogheden) op te richten met musici die concerten gaven met muziek die gecomponeerd was in nieuwe Spaanse stijl, die zich afspeelde van de Renaissance naar de nieuwe Barok. De zestien composities op het album Los ecos de Manzanares van La Boz Galana bestaan uit twee-, drie- en vierstemmige liederen, met twee instrumentale werken. Liederen over de liefde die in gedichten van belangrijke Spaanse dichters als Lope de Vega en Francisco de Quevedo prachtig metaforisch worden vertaald. Zoals de boot van de liefde die in de nacht over de Galatea vaart, of de ongelukkige liefde van het meisje Pale.

Voor vocalisten blijft het altijd weer een uitdaging om hun stem zo te kleuren dat er een fraaie cohesie ontstaat. Dat er een stemcombinatie wordt gecreëerd waarin de vocalen mooi met elkaar mengen en elkaar aanvullen. Dat is zeker het geval op dit nieuwe album van La Boz Galana. Brede vocalen die de subtiliteit van de muziek in tact laten en deze zelfs versterken door een uitgekiende voordracht, met veel aandacht voor minimale vibrato en ritenuto. Bovendien heeft het ensemble gekozen voor begeleiding die alleen op Barok-gitaar, chittarone (luit) en harp wordt gespeeld. Dat maakt dat de muziek op Los ecos de Manzanares uitblinkt in heldere subtiliteit. De musici nemen alle ruimte voor nuancering en verfijning waardoor de muziek zijn breekbaarheid niet verliest. En dat is precies wat deze CD zo bijzonder maakt!

In 2020 the Swiss ensemble La Boz Galana released the beautiful album Los ecos de Manzanares. A CD with music from 17th century from Spain, performed by 2 sopranos, countertenor, baritone, accompanied by baroque guitar and harp.

For their album Los ecos de Manzanares the ensemble La Boz Galana selected songs from the Cancionero de la Sablonara. A songbook with 75 polyphonic songs composed in the first half of the 17th century at the court in Madrid. These songs are also called the tonos humanos or secular polyphonic songs. Melodies that were well-known at that time. A fire in 1734 destroyed many songbooks but the Cancionero de la Sablonara was spared because it was not in Spain during the fire. That makes the songs even more special and important. The King of Spain, Philip IV, was a great music and dance lover. He commissioned composer Alvaro de los Rios (1580-1623) to establish the Casa de Sus Altezas (House of the Highnesses) with musicians who gave concerts of new composed music in the new Spanish style, which took place inbetween the Renaissance and the new Baroque style. The sixteen compositions on Los ecos de Manzanares consist of two, three and four part polyphonic songs, with two instrumental works. Songs about love that are beautifully metaphorically written in poems by important Spanish poets such as Lope de Vega and Francisco de Quevedo. Like the boat of love that sails the Galatea by night, or the unhappy love of the girl Pale.

For vocalists it is always a challenge to color their voice in such a way that a beautiful cohesion is created and the voice mix is beautiful and complement each other. That is certainly the case on this new album from La Boz Galana. Broad vocals that leave the subtlety of the music intact and even enhance it through a sophisticated presentation, with a lot of attention to minimal vibrato and ritenuto. In addition, the ensemble has opted for accompaniment that is only played on Baroque guitar, chittarone (kind of lute) and harp. The music on Los ecos de Manzanares excels in subtlety. The musicians take care for nuance and refinement, so that the music does not lose its fragility. And that is exactly what makes this album so special.
