De muziek op het nieuwe album Talismán van het trio van pianist Marco Mezquida straalt en schittert. Muziek die alle hoeken van het muzikale spectrum laat zien in bevlogen en bewogen composities in voortreffelijke uitvoeringen.

De Spaanse pianist Marco Mezquida heeft een ongebreidelde en spontane speelstijl. Met een bijna vanzelfsprekende virtuositeit speelt hij eigen werk samen met cellist Martin Meléndez en drummer / percussionist Aleix Tobias. Zijn composities zijn melodisch met fraaie ‘zingende’ thematiek. Soms heel duidelijk in de bovenstem van zijn pianospel maar hier en daar ook verstopt binnen brede harmonische klankkleuren. Heldere composities, transparant, met een duidelijke link naar klassieke muziek, met uitstapjes naar jazz, Zuid-Afrikaans (Carpe Diem), Zuid-Amerikaanse ritmiek en zelfs Spaanse klanken in Na Cecilia. Het cellowerk van Meléndez heeft aan de ene kant een bas-functie, om de lage tonen van het klavier kracht bij te zetten. Maar aan de andere kant ook zeker een melodische, als de cello wordt bespeeld met de strijkstok en er lange tonen klinken (Es jardí de set ànimes en Talismán) die mooi mixen met het ritmische piano- en percussiespel. Solistisch (pizzicato) horen we hem bijvoorbeeld in Lluvia muda. Slagwerker Tobias is een inventief musicus. Een ritmisch tovenaar die gemakkelijk switcht tussen drums (met fraai stokken- en brushen-werk), naar het gebruik van tamboerijn en adufé in Vientos Elisos of de udu en vibratones in Seratonina. Er wordt geweldig gespeeld door drie musici die houden van hun muziek, waar ze gelukkig van worden. En dat gelúk klinkt door in elke noot die ze ten gehore brengen, dat direct overslaat op de luisteraar. De muziek van het album Talismán ga je vanzelf koesteren en liefhebben omdat het vol zit met muzikale lyriek die zo warm, vertrouwd en oprecht klinkt. Nergens wordt de muziek obligaat of ‘ja, dat kennen we nu wel‘. Nee, steeds word je verrast door inventieve thematiek en originele en innovatieve arrangementen. The music on the new album Talismán by pianist Marco Mezquida’s trio shines and radiates. Music that shows all corners of the musical spectrum in inspired and moving compositions in excellent performances.

The Spanish pianist Marco Mezquida has an unbridled and spontaneous playing style. With a smart virtuosity, he plays his own compositions together with cellist Martin Meléndez and drummer / percussionist Aleix Tobias. His compositions are melodic with beautiful ‘singing’ themes. Sometimes very clear in the upper voice of his piano playing, but also hidden here and there within broad harmonic timbres. Clear compositions, transparent, with a nice link to classical music, with jazz influences, South African (Carpe Diem), South American rhythms and even Spanish timbre in Na Cecilia. Meléndez’s cello work has a bass function on one hand, to emphasize the low tones of the keyboard.
