De Italiaanse cellist en componist Nicola Segatta werd gevraagd om muziek te componeren voor het 45ste Festival van Heilige Muziek van Trento en Bolzano in Italië. Het resultaat is de schitterende compositie IKONE. Een werk voor solisten, koor en orkest.

Nicola Segatta is een bijzondere componist die zich weinig aantrekt van stijlkenmerken. Gelukkig maar, want daarmee excelleert hij met composities die een brede kleur en textuur laten horen. Dit vinden we terug op zijn album Shakespeare for Dreamers uit 2017. Een soortgelijke compositorische werkwijze treffen we nu ook aan in zijn nieuw werk IKONE. Een compositie voor solisten, koor en orkest. Dat klinkt redelijk traditioneel, maar aan zijn orkest voegt hij celesta, mandoline, klavecimbel, harp, saz (Turkse langhalsluit) en zelfs drums toe. Dat belooft wat, en dat komt er ook. Tegen een Byzantijnse achtergrond integreert hij strijkers en houtblazers met deze diverse instrumenten waarmee hij bijzondere klankcombinaties creëert. IKONE bestaat uit vijf delen, die qua tekst gebaseerd zijn op het evangelie van Mattheus en Johannes in de originele tekst, het Grieks. De onderlinge delen worden met elkaar verbonden door gesproken teksten van twee engelen. Zij verbinden de Aarde met de Hemel met reciterende teksten die worden vertolkt door Marco Alotto en Maria Vittoria Barrella. Daarnaast zijn er de cellist Giovanni Sollima die soleert en improviseert en twee vocale solisten: de Poolse sopraan Johanne Klisowska en de saz-speler Serhat Akbal. Bijzonder fraai hoe de compositie IKONE wisselt van klassiek (Oratorium) naar wereldmuziek, naar popmuziek met zelfs een vleugje musical. Door het gebruik van uitgekiende orkestraties, sterke thematiek, originele variaties en chromatiek is de muziek verrassend en krijgt een enorme diepgang. En niet te vergeten, het gebruik van een brede orkestratie maakt de muziek origineel met onverwachte wendingen. Hierdoor kan Nicola Segatta de muziek laten excelleren en schitteren en wordt er af toe toe flink uitgepakt. Maar toch blijft de muziek sacraal en is er grote aandacht voor stilte en meditatie binnen de verschillende delen, met verfijnde rust en wonderlijke passages. Het IKONE project is uitgebracht op CD en live-DVD met begeleidend boekje waarin het volledige libretto is afgedrukt en achtergrondinformatie te vinden is. Nicola Segatta is een groot en avontuurlijk componist die bijzondere instrument-combinaties opzoekt en de luisteraar meeneemt in nieuwe, verfijnde klank-scala’s. En dat is meer dan het luisteren waard!

The Italian cellist and composer Nicola Segatta was asked to compose music for the 45th Festival of Sacred Music of Trento and Bolzano in Italy. The result is the beautiful composition IKONE. A masterpiece for soloists, choir and orchestra.

Nicola Segatta is a great composer who does not care much about style characteristics. Fortunately, in this way he excels with compositions that show a broad colour and texture. This can be found on his album Shakespeare for Dreamers from 2017. A similar compositional approach we find in his new work IKONE. A composition for soloists, choir and orchestra. That sounds rather traditional, but he adds celesta, mandolin, harpsichord, harp, saz (Turkish long-neck lute) and even drums to the orchestra. In this way he creates beautiful music. In a Byzantine background, he integrates strings and woodwinds with these various instruments, creating special sound combinations. IKONE consists of five parts, which are textually based on the testament of St. Matthew and St. John in the original text, Greek. The mutual parts are connected by spoken texts of two angels. They connect Earth with Heaven with reciting lyrics performed by Marco Alotto and Maria Vittoria Barrella. In addition, there is the cello soloist Giovanni Sollima, who plays solo parts and improvise, and two vocal soloists: the Polish soprano Johanne Klisowska and the saz player Serhat Akbal. It is particularly beautiful how the composition IKONE changes from classical (oratorio) to world music, to pop music with even a hint of musical. The use of sophisticated orchestrations, strong themes and melodies, original variations and chromaticism makes the music surprising and original. And notice the use of a varied orchestration, which makes the music original with unexpected twists. In this way Nicola Segatta makes the music excel and shine and occasionally lifted with tight rhythms. Yet the music remains sacred and there is great attention to silence and meditation within the different parts, with refined peacefulness and wonderful passages. The IKONE project has been released on CD and live DVD with accompanying booklet in which the full libretto is printed and background information can be found. Nicola Segatta is a great and adventurous composer who composed special music with fine instrument combinations. He takes the listener into a new refined sound range. And that is more than worth listening to!
