Je kunt er eigenlijk niet meer omheen, het cello-duo Tara Fuki. Dit jaar, 2020, is het 20 jaar geleden dat dit Tsjechische tweetal Tara Fuki oprichtte. Door Covid-19 wordt het feest van de release van hun nieuwe album Motyle (Vlinders) uitgesteld tot lente 2021, maar de CD is in Nederland al verkrijgbaar.

Tara Fuki bestaat uit Andrea Konstankiewicz en Dorota Barova. Beiden Tsjechische musici bespelen de cello, zingen en worden op hun laatste album Motyle bijgestaan door Milos Dvorácek op drums en kalimba (Afrikaanse duimpiano). Konstankiewicz en Barova ontmoeten elkaar in 2000 tijdens een studie musicologie in Brno (Zuid-Oost Tsjechië). In 2003 brengen ze hun debuut-album uit waarna er nog vier albums volgen met als meest recente Motyle. De instrumentatie bestaat overwegend uit twee cello’s (met electronica) en twee vrouwenstemmen. Een unieke combinatie. Bovendien een instrumentatie waarbij je je afvraagt of er wel genoeg variatie mogelijk is. Maar dat is er zeker en het resultaat is echt ingenieus mooi. Zoals ze het zelf zeggen: ‘wat er ’s nachts in ons gebeurt, is compleet anders en vaak eerlijker dan wat we overdag waarnemen’.

Een metafoor voor hun zelf gecomponeerde stukken die een uitgekiende mix zijn van klassieke muziek, jazz, folk en improvisatie. Prachtig sereen klinkende melodieën die zich op het snijvlak van de nacht afspelen. Ze gebruiken de cello solo con arco (met de strijkstok), pizzicato (getokkelde tonen) en meerstemmig, zowel meerstemmig op één cello als ook meerstemmig op twee celli, waardoor er een licht-klinkend strijkensemble ontstaat. Daarnaast zingen ze prachtig één- en meerstemmig, veelal in het Pools. Al deze speel- en zangtechnieken worden over en door elkaar heen gebruikt. Hierdoor ontstaat een grenzeloze aaneenschakeling van prachtig tintelende sferen die een breed palet aan variatie laat horen. Singer-song writers op cello zou je kunnen zeggen. Heel subtiel en gedragen maar ook swingend met een krachtig slot in het Samoty (Eenzaamheid), met vervormde celli en compact slagwerk. Tara Fuki bewijst met Motyle dat ze na al die jaren nog steeds een grote gevestigde naam zijn binnen het Tsjechisch wereldrepertoire. Terecht, een geweldig album!

You can no longer ignore it, the cello duo Tara Fuki. This year, 2020, it is 20 years ago that this Czech duo founded Tara Fuki. Covid-19 has postponed the celebration of the release of their new album Motyle (Butterflies) until spring 2021, but the CD is already available (in the Netherlands).

Tara Fuki consists of Andrea Konstankiewicz and Dorota Barova. Both Czech musicians play the cello and sing. On their latest album Motyle they are accompanied by Milos Dvorácek on drums and kalimba (African thumb piano). In 2000 Konstankiewicz and Barova met each other while studying musicology in Brno (a city in the South-East of the Czech Republic). In 2003 they released their debut album, followed by four CD’s and most recently Motyle. The instrumentation mainly consists of two cellos (with electronics) and two female voices. An unique combination. Moreover, an instrumentation where you wonder whether enough variation is possible. But that is for sure and the result is really ingeniously beautiful. As they put it themselves, “what happens inside you at night is completely different and often fairer than what we perceive during the day.” A metaphor for their wonderful self-composed pieces that are a clever mix of classical music, jazz, folk and improvisation. Beautifully serene sounding melodies on the cutting edge of the night. They use the cello solo con arco (with the bow), pizzicato (plucked notes) and polyphony. Both polyphony on one cello and also polyphony on two cellos, creating a light-sounding string ensemble. They also sing beautifully in unison and polyphony, mostly in Polish. All these playing and singing techniques are used in diverse combinations. This creates a limitless sequence of beautifully tingling atmospheres that show a wide palette of variation. Singer-song writers on cello, so the say. Very subtle and carried, swinging and even a powerful ending in the Samoty (Loneliness) with distorted cellos and compact percussion. After all these years Tara Fuki proves with Motyle that they are still a big established name in the Czech music world repertoire. Yes indeed!, for sure, a great album!
