Het nieuwste album Storyteller van Boi Akih zou op de valreep van 2020 zomaar het beste album van dit jaar kunnen worden of nu al de meest innoverende CD van 2021. Een zeer fraaie collectie muzikaal verhalende vocale liederen onder begeleiding van gitaar, blokfluiten, kora (West-Afrikaanse harp), hier en daar aangevuld met percussie door gastmusici.

In 1996 startte gitarist Niels Brouwer met zangeres Monica Akihary het duo Boi Akih met als doel een mooie symbiose te creëren van Molukse (vocale) tradities met jazz, geïmproviseerde en wereldmuziek. Boi Akih houdt de bezetting klein en intiem wat zich uit in muziek die excelleert in ‘met het minimale, het maximale bereiken‘. Daar zijn deze twee doorgewinterde musici erg goed in. Een werkwijze die ook op hun nieuwe album Storyteller weer zo perfect uitpakt. Ze worden bijgestaan door de fenomenale blokfluitspeelster Dodó Kis en Sekou Dioubate op de west-Afrikaanse kora die speciaal werd omgebouwd tot een chromatische versie. De kora is van origine pentatonisch, waar nu, in de nieuwe versie, de rest van het toonscala is toegevoegd. Daarnaast horen we op enkele tracks de gastmusici Vernon Chatlein en Nippy Noya (ooit begonnen bij de band Massada) op percussie. Alle stukken zijn door Niels Brouwer geschreven, zijn soms doorgecomponeerd en bezitten allen een heel eigen sfeer en karakter. Werkelijk fraai is het samenspel van gitaar en kora. Beide snaarinstrumenten hebben een heel eigen timbre en mixen voortreffelijk. Excellent bijvoorbeeld in het stuk Japala’ a, waar zang en blokfluit zich uiteindelijk als stralende bovenstemmen bewegen over dynamisch en levendig snarenwerk. Schitterend! De composities van Niels Brouwer doemen soms op uit een mist van klanken en effecten en ontwikkelen zich tot sprankelende muziek zoals te horen in Dryland en Design of Stars and Clouds. Imaginary Journey is een fraai spel tussen gitaar, acrobatische blokfluit en fonetische zang, net zoals in Mahina, wat een vibrerende twinkeling is tussen gitaar en kora. Zangeres Monica Akihary heeft een soepele stem. Zij past haar vocalen moeiteloos aan binnen de arrangementen, waardoor de zang niet steeds op de voorgrond staat maar ook gebruikt wordt als instrument en zich fluweel-zacht mengt binnen het geheel. Ze zingt zowel fonetisch als ook in het Engels en het Haruku. De taal van het gelijknamig eiland, ten oosten van Ambon. Het eiland waar haar vader vandaan komt. Storyteller staat vol muzikale vertellingen die opwindend en beladen zijn, maar ook sprookjesachtig, theatraal, gedragen en zelfs plechtig. Tien wereldverhalen die zijn samengebracht op een tot de verbeelding sprekende CD, met een weelderig scala aan muziek waar je met gemak een heel jaar mee vooruit kunt!

Boi Akih’s latest album Storyteller could just become the best album of this year at the end of 2020 or already the most innovative CD of 2021. A very nice collection of musically narrative vocal songs accompanied by guitar, recorders, kora ( West African harp), supplemented here and there with percussion by guest musicians.

In 1996 guitarist Niels Brouwer and singer Monica Akihary started the duo Boi Akih with the aim of mixing Moluccan (vocal) traditions with jazz, improvised and world music. Boi Akih keeps the line-up small and intimate, which is expressed in the music that excels in ‘achieving the maximum with the minimum’. These two musicians has become seasoned professionals. This method also works out so perfectly on their new album Storyteller. They are joined by the phenomenal recorder player Dodó Kis and Sekou Dioubate on the west African kora. His kora has been specially converted into a chromatic version. The kora is originally pentatonic, where now, in the new version, the rest of the tonal range has been added. On some tracks we also hear the guest percussionists Vernon Chatlein and Nippy Noya (once started with the great Dutch band Massada). All pieces are written by Niels Brouwer, are sometimes through-composed and all have their own atmosphere and character. The combination of guitar and kora is really beautiful. Both string instruments have their own timbre and mix superbly. Excellent, for example, in the piece Japala’ a, where vocals and recorder ultimately move as radiant upper voices over dynamic and lively strings. Splendid!

Some compositions of Niels Brouwer emerge from a kind of musical fog of sounds and effects and develop into sparkling music as can be heard in Dryland and Design of Stars and Clouds. Imaginary Journey is a beautiful play between guitar, acrobatic recorder and phonetic vocals, just like in Mahina, which is a vibrating twinkle between guitar and kora. Singer Monica Akihary has a smooth voice. She adapts her vocals effortlessly within the arrangements, so that the vocals are not always in the foreground but are also used as an instrument and softly blends into the music. Really splendid. She sings phonetically as well as in English and Haruku. The language of the island, east of Ambon, where her father comes from. Storyteller is full of musical stories that are exciting and full of energy, but also fairytale like, theatrical, carried-away and even solemn. Ten world stories brought together on one imaginative CD, with a lush range of music. With ease music for the whole year 2021!
