De Corona-tijd heeft naast veel ellende ook zijn goede kanten. Drummer, percussionist en componist Joost Lijbaart gebruikte deze periode om het muzikale roer om te gooien en zich te richten op zijn innerlijke muzikale stem en deze te reflecteren tegen een breed meditatief muzisch perspectief.

Joost Lijbaart is een druk musicus die al jaren actief is binnen de Nederlandse jazz- en geïmproviseerde muziekwereld. Hij nam vijf albums op met saxofonist Yuri Honing en enkele met het Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet. Hij is ook te vinden op het schitterend album Residence met meesterpianist Michiel Borstlap. Daarnaast had hij zijn eigen projecten Group of Friends, Batik en zijn werk met pianist Wolfert Brederode. Hij toerde de hele wereld over voor jazz-festival concerten en werd ook nog genomineerd voor een Edison voor zijn trio met Sanne Rambags en gitarist Bram Stadhouders. Het is een hele opsomming en dit zijn zeker niet al zijn werkzaamheden, maar het geeft wel aan wat voor een veel gevraagd, actief en succesvol muzikant hij is. Maar in Corona-tijd liggen de muzikale kaarten opeens heel anders op tafel, wanneer concerten (bijna) onmogelijk zijn en musici, door de strenge regels, elkaar nauwelijks ontmoeten. Dan ziet de wereld er opeens heel anders uit. Voor Lijbaart een tijd van bezinning, van innerlijke dialoog, van een zoektocht naar de angst, kracht, vreugde, passie en oneindigheid, zoals hij het zelf beschrijft. Een tijd van componeren, arrangeren en opnemen, waarna FREE verschijnt. Het debuut solo-album van deze veelzijdige musicus. Op de cover prijkt een soort kwadrant, in een doorlopende lijn, die refereert aan de vier elementen. Op FREE speelt Lijbaart alle instrumenten: drums, klokkenspel, bellen, harmonium, vibrafoon, balafoon (West-Afrikaanse marimba), vibrafoon, klokkenspel  odaiko (Japanse grote trommel; taiko) en fluit. De muziek is open en duidelijk gecomponeerd vanuit de stilte, vanuit de seréne stilte, die met zorg wordt ingekleurd en versierd met klanken, melodieën en effecten. Steeds staat het totaalbeeld van meditatie en overpeinzing centraal die wordt ingebed door diverse percussie-instrumenten die op een melodische kleur-wijze worden benaderd. Het resultaat is adembenemend. Spannend in het openingswerk Strangers from the sky, twinkelend in Corona Spiritual en Saman; met een stevig percussief B-gedeelte. Pulserend in polyritmisch Half Moon en Niaga en zelfs Zen in Dreamtime. FREE is een meditatief album, fraai gecomponeerd vanuit het hart van de stilte.

Besides a lot of misery, the Corona time also has its good sides. Drummer, percussionist and composer Joost Lijbaart used this period to change the musical course to focus on his inner musical voice, to reflect it against a broad meditative musical spectrum.

Joost Lijbaart is a busy musician who has been active for years within the Dutch jazz and improvised music world. He recorded five albums with saxophonist Yuri Honing and several with the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet. He can also be found on the beautiful album Residence with master pianist Michiel Borstlap. In addition he had his own projects Group of Friends, Batik and his work with pianist Wolfert Brederode. He toured all over the world for jazz festival concerts and was also nominated for an Edison Award for his trio with Sanne Rambags and guitarist Bram Stadhouders. It is quite an enumeration and certainly not all of his activities, but it indicates what a busy, active and successful musician he is. But Corona time changed it all. Concerts are (almost) impossible and musicians, due to the strict rules, hardly meet each other. Then suddenly, the world looks very different. For Lijbaart a time to reflect, time for an inner dialogue. Facing the “fear, strength, joy, passion and infinity”, as he describes it himself. it became a time of composing, arranging and recording, after which he released his new album FREE. The debut solo album by this versatile musician. On the cover there is a kind of quadrant, a kind of continuous line, that refers to the four elements. At FREE, Lijbaart plays all instruments: drums, glockenspiel, bells, harmonium, vibraphone, balafon (West African marimba), vibraphone, glockenspiel odaiko (Japanese large drum; taiko) and flute. The music is open and clearly composed from the centerpoint of silence, from the seréne silence, which is carefully coloured and ornamented with sounds, melodies and effects. The overall picture of meditation and contemplation is always central, which is embedded by various percussion instruments that are approached in a melodic way. The result is breathtaking. Exciting in the opening work Strangers from the sky, twinkling in Corona Spiritual and Saman; with a solid percussive B-part. Pulsing and polyrhythmic in Half Moon and Niaga and even Zen in Dreamtime. FREE is a meditative album, beautifully composed from the heart of silence.
