De Noorse pianist Bugge Wesseltoft blinkt altijd uit in melodie en harmonie, een onlosmakend geheel voor deze lyrische pianist. Hoorden we hem in 2012 nog met violist Henning Kraggerud, en enkele jaren later met de Palestijnse zangeres Rim Banna (1985–2017) op het fantastische album Revelation of Ecstasy & Rebellion‘, nu is hij terug met het nieuwe, tweede album van het trio Rymden.

De samenwerking van Wesseltoft met drummer Magnus Öström en bassist Dan Berglund resulteert in het dynamische Rymden. Een samenwerking die niet zo heel vreemd is, aangezien Öström en Berglund jarenlang de begeleiders waren van pianist Esbjörn Svensson, van het trio E.S.T. Een pianist die in 2008 overleed aan een duikongeluk, 44 jaar oud. Qua melodische benadering sluit het trio Rymden aan bij E.S.T. Ook hier excelleren deze drie musici in verhalende thematiek die schitterend wordt uitgewerkt. Bovendien zijn de heren aan elkaar gewaagd. Alle drie componeerden ze stukken voor hun 2de album Space Sailors, zijn ze avontuurlijk in het gebruik van ritmiek en maken ze slim en gedoceerd gebruik van elektronica. De stukken op Space Sailors behoren niet tot het conventionele jazz-repertoire. Stevige baspartijen (The life and death… en The Final Goodbye en The actor Igonzo….) worden ondersteund door compact en ingenieus drumwerk en omspeelt met klavierwerk van Wesseltoft op de vleugel, Fender Rhodes, Moog en celesta. De stukken worden gelardeerd met elektronische geluiden/klanken die de muziek rijker en diepgaander maakt, maar ook zorgt voor vervreemdende en zelfs licht psychedelische effecten zoals in Arriving at Ramajay, met o.a. de twinkelende celesta. De melodie is een zeer belangrijk aspect in de composities van Rymden. Deze blijft het onmiskenbare middelpunt en de geeft de muziek zijn aanzuigende werking die na elke luisterbeurt onweerstaanbaarder wordt.

The Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft always excels in melody and beautiful harmony. An inseparable way of making music for this lyrical pianist. We heard him in 2012 with violinist Henning Kraggerud, and a few years later with Palestinian singer Rim Banna (1985–2017) on the fantastic album Revelation of Ecstasy & Rebellion. Now he is back with the new, second album of the trio Rymden.

The collaboration of Wesseltoft with drummer Magnus Öström and bassist Dan Berglund results in the dynamic Rymden. A collaboration that is not very strange, given that Öström and Berglund were the accompanists of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, of the trio E.S.T. A pianist who died after a diving accident in 2008, aged 44. In terms of melodic approach, the Rymden trio ties in with E.S.T. Here too the trio excels in narrative themes that are beautifully elaborated. Moreover, these three fine musicians are well matched. All three composed pieces for their 2nd album Space Sailors, they are adventurous in the use of rhythm and they make clever use of electronics. The pieces on Space Sailors are not part of the conventional jazz repertoire. Heavy bass parts (like in: The life and death…. The Final Goodbye and The actor Igonzo….) are supported by compact and inventive drumming and improvised with by the wonderful Wesseltoft on the grand piano, Fender Rhodes, Moog and celesta. The pieces are larded with electronics which creates a richer and deeper sound, but also provides alienating and even a slightly psychedelic effects like in Arriving at Ramajay, with a lovely twinkling celesta. The melody is always a very important aspect in Rymden’s compositions. This remains the unmistakable centerpiece and gives the music its suction effect that becomes more irresistible after every time you listen to this excellent music.
