Touki is de debuut solo-CD van de Sengalese zanger Modou Touré. Een sterk album waar deze sympathieke zanger zijn muzikaal licht laat schijnen op diverse muziekstijlen en deze geraffineerd mixt met zijn West Afrikaanse achtergrond.

Al op jonge leeftijd komt Modou in contact met muziek via zijn vader die jarenlang de zanger was van Touré Kunda. Een muzikaal veelzijdige band met een politieke achtergrond. Als kind zingt en speelt hij (drums) in lokale bands. In 2000 start Modou Touré zijn eigen band en leert gitaarspelen. Zeven jaar later emigreert hij naar Londen en bouwt verder aan zijn muzikale carrière. Hij mixt West Afrikaanse muziek met pop, rock en funk en brengt het fantastische The West African Blues Project uit, samen met de Britse gitarist Ramon Goose. Een mooi dynamisch album. Ook op zijn eerste solo-album Touki heeft Modou Touré het goed voor elkaar. Hij schreef alle stukken, zingt in het Engels, Mandingo, Wolof en Soninke en heeft een begeleidingsband met bekwame muzikanten. Hij speelt gitaar en heeft een soepele stem, met een hoog en helder timbre waarmee hij ook regelmatig fraai meerstemmig te horen is. Bovendien heeft hij een kráchtige stem waarmee hij zo nu en dan staccato zingt. Zijn teksten handelen over emigreren, onrecht, hypocrisie en zijn continent Afrika. Opvallend zijn de pakkende melodieën die zo vertrouwd en warm klinken en gehuld zijn in strakke arrangementen door elektrisch gitaar, Hammond orgel, bas, drums en een voortreffelijke blazerssectie van trompet, trombone en saxofoon. Modou Touré zingt vanuit zijn hart, en speelt vanuit zijn ziel. Hij is een levensgenieter, dat zit verscholen in zijn muziek. Dat voel je en hoor je!

Touki is the title debut solo CD by the Sengalese singer Modou Touré. A great album where this sympathetic singer shines his musical light on various music styles and blends them refined with his West African background.

At a young age, Modou came into contact with music through his father, who was the singer of Touré Kunda for many years. A musically versatile band with a political background. As a child Modou Touré sings and plays (drums) in local bands. In 2000 he started his own band and learned how to play the guitar. Seven years later he emigrated to London and continued his musical career. He mixes West African music with pop, rock and funk and releases the fantastic The West African Blues Project, together with British guitarist Ramon Goose. A nice dynamic album. On Touki Modou Touré wrote all the pieces, sings in English, Mandingo, Wolof and Soninke and has a backing band with skilled musicians. He plays the guitar and has a smooth voice, with a high and clear timbre with which he can regularly be heard in beautiful polyphony. In addition, he has a powerful voice with which he occasionally sings staccato. His lyrics deal with emigration, injustice, hypocrisy and his continent of Africa. Striking are the catchy melodies that sound so familiar and warm and are wrapped in tight arrangements by electric guitar, Hammond organ, bass, drums and an excellent horn section of trumpet, trombone and saxophone.
