De muziek die de Finse accordeoniste Maria Kalaniemi uitbrengt op CD, is altijd van grote kwaliteit. Na haar album Svalan (2017), dat ze opnam met haar landgenoot en harmoniumspeler Eero Grundström, kwam in april 2020 Mielo op de markt: weer een samenwerking Grundström.

Folk is bij uitstek muziek die van ene kant vrolijk en opgewekt is, maar je aan de andere kant ook melancholisch en weemoedig kan maken. Een dualiteit die zo nu en dan zaligmakend is. Wordt de muziek dan ook nog gespeeld op accordeon door accordeoniste Maria Kalaniemi, dan wordt het tijd om de zakdoek tevoorschijn te halen. Op Mielo (Gedachten) staan transparante composities met een schitterende melodische schoonheid. Puur, ongerept en fris. De muziek is een metaforische wandeling door de geest: via bossen, bergen, langs watervallen met schakerende wolkenpartijen, zoals Kalaniemi het zelf verwoordt. En dat klopt. De accordeon, met zijn rijke klank en lange tonen die mooi worden afgewisseld met staccato-partijen die fantastisch kleuren bij het harmonium-werk van Eero Grundström. Alleen al de openingstrack: Erämorsian (Wildflower Pride). Een snelle lentedans in driekwartsmaat die dartelt door de wei met korte en lange melodieën. De muziek op Mielo straalt rust en comfort uit en wordt gespeeld door twee vakbekwame musici, dat moge duidelijk zijn. Het album is opgenomen met hier en daar flink wat galm en wat soundscape geluiden die de kleuring van de instrumenten nog verder uitdiept en zelfs een heerlijke tweede, ietwat dromerige laag, toevoegt. Op de laatste drie tracks zingt Maria Kalaniemi de melodie (mee) met haar stem in een soort vocalise: het zingen van een woordloze tekst. Een ietwat overbodige aanvulling. Maar ik ben dan allang overtuigd: Mielo is een rijk album en een fantastische opkikker voor de geest. Aanrader!

If the music is also played on accordion by accordionist Maria Kalaniemi, then it is time to take out your handkerchief. Mielo (Thoughts) has transparent compositions with a lovely melodic beauty. Pure, pristine and fresh. The music is a metaphorical walk in the mind through forests, mountains, waterfalls with shimmering clouds. The accordion, with its rich sound and long tones that are nicely interspersed with staccato parts fits fantastically in the harmonium work of Eero Grundström. For example, the opening track: ​​Erämorsian (Wildflower Pride). A fast spring-time dance in three-quarter time that frolics through the meadow with short and long melodies. The music on Mielo radiates peace and comfort and is played by two skilled musicians, indeed. The album was recorded with a lot of reverb here and there and some soundscape sounds, that further deepens the colouring of the instruments and even adds a great second, somewhat dreamy layer. On the last three tracks Maria Kalaniemi sings the melody (along) with her voice in a kind of vocalise: singing a wordless text. A somewhat unnecessary addition. But I’m already convinced: Mielo is a rich album and a fantastic boost for the mind. Splendid music that makes me dance inside. Recommended!
