Dat het Italiaanse kwartet New Landscapes níeuwe muzikale landschappen betreedt, is duidelijk te horen op hun album Menhir. Alleen al de bezetting viool, Barok-luit/ûd (Arabische luit), accordeon en basklarinet is een bijzondere en wekt veel verwachtingen, die ook worden ingelost.

Het kwartet New Landscapes speelt instrumentale muziek tegen een klassieke achtergrond, met hier en daar een knipoog naar jazz, geïmproviseerde, oriëntaalse en hedendaagse muziek. De muziek is verhalend, filmisch, met prachtige melodieën en thema’s. Fraai gecomponeerd, waar veel aandacht is besteed om een coherent geluid te creëren, een compacte sound te maken van de vier instrumenten die lieflijk om elkaar heen kleuren. Mooi hoe soms arpeggio’s van luit en basklarinet zich krullen rond de lange noten van de viool en accordeon. Zelfs de composities van de free-jazz musici Sun Ra en Ornette Coleman en muziek van de eigentijdse componist John Cage wordt door het kwartet New Landscapes getransformeerd tot eigen muziek. Deze stukken passen bijzonder goed binnen het repertoire op Menhir dat verder vooral bestaat uit door Francesco Ganassin en Luca Chiavinato gecomponeerd werk. Menhir is het vierde album van de groep en het eerste conceptalbum, opgenomen in mei 2019. De titel Menhir refereert aan de grote stenen waar omheen werd gedanst (Obelix had er een voortdurend op zijn rug). Op deze manshoge stenen zijn afbeeldingen te vinden die ook op de hoes zijn afgebeeld. Het kwartet bestaat uit violiste Silvia Rinaldi, luitist Luca Chiavinato, accordeonist Sergio Marchesini en basklarinettist Francesco Ganassin. Vier musici die hun sporen binnen de muziek allang hebben verdiend. Dat hoor je, voel je en merk je….en dat is voortreffelijk!

The Italian quartet New Landscapes is entering new musical landscapes on their album Menhir. The instrumentation of violin, Baroque lute / ûd (Arabic lute), accordion and bass clarinet is very special and arouses many expectations….

The New Landscapes quartet plays instrumental music in a classical background, with here and there influences of jazz, improvised, oriental and contemporary music. The music is narrative, cinematic, with wonderful melodies and theme’s in sparkling music. Beautifully composed, where a lot of attention has been paid to create a coherent sound, to make these instruments colour coherently around each other. Beautiful how sometimes arpeggios of lute and bass clarinet curls around the long notes of the violin and accordion. Even the compositions of the free-jazz musicians Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman and music of the contemporary composer John Cage are transformed into their own music by the quartet New Landscapes. These arrangements fit particularly well within the repertoire on Menhir, which further mainly consists of work composed by Francesco Ganassin and Luca Chiavinato. Menhir is the group’s fourth album and the first concept album, recorded in May 2019. The title Menhir refers to the large stones that were danced around (Obelix had one on his back all the time). These man-sized stones contain images that are also depicted on the cover. The quartet consists of violinist Silvia Rinaldi, lutenist Luca Chiavinato, accordionist Sergio Marchesini and bass clarinetist Francesco Ganassin. Four musicians who are well trained in making and creating wonderful music. You can hear it, feel it and easily notice it….and that is so wonderful!
