De nieuwe dampende CD Transformation van de Spaanse supergroep Aurora Clara is van absolute klasse. Een dijk van een album waar de jazzrock- en fusion- liefhebber van zal smullen. Muziek die de randen opzoekt van de jazzrock uit de jaren ’70 en ’80 van o.a. het Mahavishnu Orchestra van gitarist John Mc Laughlin.

Aurora Clara is een Spaanse band rond de gitarist Raul Mannola die (bijna) alle stukken schreef voor de debuut-CD Transformation. Een naam-metafoor voor de muziek van dit vijftal dat duidelijk leunt tegen de jazzrock uit de jaren ’70 en ’80. De muziek transformeert je even helemaal terug naar die jaren, naar de muziek van het Mahavishnu Orchestra van gitarist John Mc Laughlin (met de geweldige pianist Jan Hammer). Maar ook naar de muziek van de Finse gitarist Jukka Tolonen, de Amerikaanse gitarist Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple), de Brit Allan Holdsworth en violist Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu, The Flock, Steve Morse), die ook te horen is op dit album in de openingstrack Aktur.

Aurora Clara zijn vijf fantastische musici die voortreffelijke instrumentale jazzrock spelen in een landschap van stevige (poly)ritmiek, maatwisselingen (Dancing in the Forest), fraaie jazz-harmonieën, aangevuld met flamenco-, blues- en rockinvloeden, gespeeld op elektrische instrumenten. De composities zijn hecht, zitten strak en spannend in elkaar, met glooiend melodische thema’s. Echt opvallend zijn de virtuoze en pittige solo’s op gitaar, dwarsfluit, keyboards en bas, waarbij de solist magistraal wordt begeleid door de band. Raul Mannola die zijn gitaar laat beuken en scheuren (Song to John met een vlammend slot! en Astrocytus met maatverdubbeling). Hij heeft een heerlijke fuzzy sound met gebruik van sustain. Dit effect zorgt ervoor dat de toon lang doorklinkt en daardoor meer impact heeft. Pianist Stanislav Borisov speelt o.a. synthesizer en Fender Rhodes (die doet denken aan Jan Hammer) waarmee hij virtuoos soleert in Narayana Blues aangevuld met een synthesizer-solo. Opmerkelijk is ook de dwarsfluit die door Juan Carlos Aracil van zijn lief imago wordt ontdaan. Door zijn sprekende solo in bijvoorbeeld Dancing in the Forest en Astrocytus geeft hij de dwarsfluit een robuust timbre. Aurora Clara wordt ondersteund door drummer Marco Anderson (speelt met krachtige variaties) en bassist Nill Oliveira die samen met Anderson een hecht tandem vormt. Een solide basis voor een verdomd strakke band. Aurora Clara laat met Transformation de jazzrock-scene even op zijn grondvesten schudden en blaast nieuw leven in deze doorwrochte stijl!

The new steaming CD Transformation by the Spanish supergroup Aurora Clara is of absolute class. A splendid album for the jazz rock and fusion music lover. Music that explores the fringes of jazz rock from the 70s and 80s like the Mahavishnu Orchestra of guitarist John Mc Laughlin, among others.

Aurora Clara is a Spanish band around the guitarist Raul Mannola who wrote (almost) all the pieces for the debut CD Transformation. A name metaphor for the music of this quintet that clearly leans against the jazz rock of the 70s and 80s. The music transforms you all the way back to those years with the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra by guitarist John Mc Laughlin (with the great pianist Jan Hammer). But we also hear influences from the music of the Finnish guitarist Jukka Tolonen, the American guitarist Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple), the Brit Allan Holdsworth and violinist Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu, The Flock, Steve Morse), who is also a guest musician on this album in the opening track Aktur.

Aurora Clara are five fantastic musicians who play excellent instrumental jazz rock in a landscape of solid (poly) rhythm, changes in time (Dancing in the Forest), beautiful jazz harmonies, supplemented with flamenco, blues and rock influences, played on electric instruments. The compositions are tight and exciting, with sloping melodic themes. Really striking are the virtuoso and spirited solos on guitar, flute, keyboards and bass, where the soloist is accompanied by the band. Raul Mannola pounding and tearing his guitar (Song to John with a flaming end part! and Astrocytus where the beat suddenly is played double time). It has a wonderful fuzzy sound using sustain. This effect ensures that the tone is sustained for a long time and therefore it has more impact. Pianist Stanislav Borisov plays synthesizer and Fender Rhodes (reminiscent of Jan Hammer), with which he performs a virtuoso solo in Narayana Blues, supplemented with a synthesizer solo. Noteworthy is also the flute of Juan Carlos Aracil on which he removes the sweet image of the instrument. Because of his expressive solo in, for example, Dancing in the Forest and Astrocytus. He gives the flute a wonderful and robust timbre. Aurora Clara is supported by drummer Marco Anderson (plays with powerful variations) and bassist Nill Oliveira who forms a tight tandem with Anderson. A solid foundation for a damn good and tight band. With the album Transformation Aurora Clara shakes the jazz rock scene on its foundations and gives the jazz rock scene a new life into it’s elaborate style!
