Alhoewel de CD Folk fables in Song van Domna Samiou al in 2008 werd uitgebracht, is het schitterende dubbel-album nu ook gemakkelijk verkrijgbaar in Nederland via Xango Music Distribution (XMD) in Utrecht. Gelukkig maar, want de (lied)collectie bevat bijzondere oude Griekse muziek. Bewerkingen maar ook op locatie opgenomen liederen door Domna Samiou.

Veel landen hebben hun eigen etnomusicologen die op zoek zijn gegaan naar de lokale muziek uit hun land. In het begin van de 20ste eeuw reisden de componisten Bela Bartok en Zoltan Kodaly door Hongarije op zoek naar de lokale muziek. Deze namen zij op met een fonograaf, noteerden ze en verwerkten deze in hun composities. Musicoloog Alan Lomax reisde door o.a. de V.S., met een bandrecorder,net zoals Deben Battacharya, die door India trok en lokale muziek opnam. In Nederland was het Ate Doornbosch die in de 60- en 70-er jaren op zoek ging naar de lokale melodieën die hij liet horen in Onder de groene Linden. Een wekelijks radioprogramma dat werd uitgezonden tussen 1976 en 1994.

In Griekenland is het Domna Samiou (1928/2012) die op zoek ging naar de authentiek Griekse muziek. Al in haar jonge tienerjaren raakt zij geïnteresseerd in muziek. Ze krijgt les in Byzantijnse en folkmuziek en komt in contact met de nationale radio waar ze begin jaren ’50 voor gaat werken. In die tijd werd veel muziek live opgenomen en op deze manier komt zij in contact met belangrijke Griekse musici en diverse stijlen. Begin jaren ’70 start Samiou haar eigen muziek carriere en gaat LP’s opnemen. Bovendien maakt zij reizen door Griekenland, op zoek dus naar lokale muziek die ze laat horen in het TV-programma Musiko Odiporiko. In 1981 wordt de Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association opgericht met als doel: het Grieks cultureel muzikaal erfgoed dat Domna Samiou door de jaren heeft verzameld, beschikbaar te maken voor het publiek. Er worden zo’n 12 CD-collecties uitgegeven van op locatie opgenomen muziek aangevuld met bewerkte Griekse stukken door o.a. Domnia Samiou zelf. Zo ook op de schitterende uitgave Folk fables in Song uit 2008. Een dubbel-CD die zich bevindt in een 260 pagina tellend boekje vol informatie over de liederen met de teksten, achtergrond informatie en fraaie illustraties. Liederen uit o.a. Kreta, Chios, de Zwarte Zee regio, Thracië, Cyprus en Eperius, waar de prachtige klaagliederen (miroloi) vandaan komen met die zo karakteristieke huilende klarinet. Enkele liederen zijn op locatie opgenomen en worden solistisch gezongen, maar veruit de meeste composities worden gespeeld en gezongen door diverse musici op o.a. de kaval (hese fluit), ûd (Arabische luit), klarinet, darbouka (trommel) en viool. De ongerepte stem van Domna, het vrouwen- en mannenkoor en de ongerepte authentieke stemmen op de locatie-opnames stralen een grote liefde uit voor de Griekse muziek. Domna Samiou blijft in haar bewerkingen zo dicht mogelijk bij het origineel. De melodieën worden niet opgeleukt, maar gespeeld en gezongen in de meest pure vorm. Folk fables in Song is een fantastisch tijdloos project. Een echte aanrader voor de Griekse muziekliefhebber die wordt getrakteerd op 34 wonderschone liedjes uit een van de mooiste landen rond de Middellandse Zee.

Although the CD Folk fables in Song by Domna Samiou was already released in 2008, the beautiful double album is now also easily available in the Netherlands via Xango Music Distribution (XMD) in Utrecht. Many countries have their own ethnomusicologists who have sought out local music from their country. In the early 20th century, the composers Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly travelled through Hungary in search of local music. They recorded this with a phonograph, wrote it down and incorporated the melodies in their own compositions. Musicologist Alan Lomax has travelled through the U.S., with a tape recorder, just like Deben Battacharya, who travelled through India recording local music. In the Netherlands it was Ate Doornbosch who was looking for the local melodies which were broadcasted in his radio program Onder de Groene Linden (‘Under the Green Linden’) in the 60s and 70s. Weekly broadcasted between 1976 and 1994.

In Greece it was Domna Samiou (1928/2012) who was in search for authentic Greek music. She became interested in music in her early teens. She was taught Byzantine and folk music and came in contact with the national radio for which she worked in the early 1950s. At that time a lot of music was live recorded and in this way she became familier with important Greek musicians and various styles. In the early 1970s Samiou started her own music career and released several records. Moreover, she travels through Greece, looking for local music, recorded it on tape and played in the TV program Musiko Odiporiko. In 1981, the Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association was established to make the Greek cultural musical heritage available for the audience. About 12 CD collections of music, recorded on location, were published, supplemented with edited Greek pieces by Domnia Samiou herself. This also applies to the wonderful editions of Folk fables in Song from 2008. A double CD which is contained in a 260-page booklet full of information about the songs with the lyrics, background information and beautiful illustrations. Songs from, among others, Crete, Chios, the Black Sea region, Thrace, Cyprus and Eperius, where the beautiful lamentations (miroloi) come from with the characteristic howling clarinet. Some of the songs have been recorded on location and are sung solo, but the vast majority of compositions are played and sung by various musicians, playing the kaval (hoarse flute), ûd (Arabic lute), clarinet, darbouka (drum) and violin. The pristine voice of Domna, the women’s and men’s choir and the authentic voices on location recordings radiate a great love for Greek music. Domna Samiou remains as close as possible to the original in her adaptations. The melodies are not embellished, but played and sung in the purest form. Folk fables in Song is a timeless project. Highly recommended for the Greek music lover who is treated to 34 beautiful songs from one of the most beautiful countries around the Mediterranean.
