Zelden een muzikant gehoord die zo verbonden is met zijn instrument als Custódio Castelo. Deze guitara Portugesa-speler maakte in de jaren ’90 furore o.a. als begeleider van de fado-zangeres Cristina Branco. Inmiddels is hij uitgegroeid tot een van de beste guitara Portuguesa spelers.

De eerste keer dat ik Custódio Castelo live hoorde spelen, was in een klein zaaltje in Amsterdam-West eind jaren ’90. Hij gaf een concert met de toen nog jonge fadozangeres Cristina Branco. De opnames van dit intieme concert zijn uitgebracht bij ARC-Music: Live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Wat direct opviel was de intensiteit van zijn spel. Het omspelen, variëren, zijn touché en intonatie waren en zijn verbluffend. Castelo beheerst het tot in de puntjes en is zo ongeveer vergroeid met zijn instrument. Hij laat zijn guitara zingen in een accuraat en nauwgezet metier. Op zijn nieuwe CD Amália Classics horen we hem in klassiekers van fadista Amália Rodrigues (1920 – 1999), de meest invloedrijke fadozangeres uit de 20ste eeuw. Door het beluisteren van haar muziek raakte Custódio Castelo als kind in de ban van de fado en de guitara Portuguesa. Het album Amália Classics is een eerbetoon aan zijn grote voorbeeld. Het is een instrumentale weergave van het werk van deze fadista waar hij begeleid wordt door de akoestische gitaristen Carlos Garcia en Maximo Ciúro. Custódio Castelo werkte ook samen met o.a. de fadista Misia en Mariza en speelde met wereld-accordeonist Richard Galliano, pianist Arriga Cappelletti en bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura. Bij al zijn projecten was de fado nooit ver weg. Maar op Amália Classics is deze diep in de Portugese cultuur gewortelde stijl waarin de saudade, de weemoed, zo fraai wordt weerspiegeld, even helemaal terug.

Rarely heard of a musician who is so much connected to his instrument as Custódio Castelo. This guitara Portugesa player caused a furore in the 90s as an accompanist of the fado singer Cristina Branco. He has now become one of the best players on the Guitara Portuguesa.

The first time I heard Custódio Castelo live, was in a small café in Amsterdam-West in the late 1990s. He gave a concert with the then young fado singer Cristina Branco. The recordings of this intimate concert have been released at ARC-Music: Live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. What immediately stood out was the intensity of his playing. His melody touch, variations, his touché and intonation were and are amazing. Castelo masters it to perfection and has almost grown to his instrument. He makes his guitara sing in an accurate and meticulous manner. On his new CD Amália Classics we hear him play classics written and sung by fadista Amália Rodrigues (1920 – 1999). She was the most influential fado singer of the 20th century. As a child Custódio Castelo fell under the spell of fado and guitara Portuguesa by listening to her music. The album Amália Classics is a tribute to his great idol. It is an instrumental representation of the work of this fadista, accompanied by the acoustic guitarists Carlos Garcia and Maximo Ciúro. Custódio Castelo also collaborated with the fadista Misia and Mariza, among others, and played with world accordionist Richard Galliano, pianist Arriga Cappelletti and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura. Fado was never far away in all his projects. But Amália Classics is full of deeply rooted fado. The great Portuguese music, in which the saudade (melancholy) is so beautifully reflected, as you can hear in these ten songs.
