De sevdah of de sevdalinka zijn de prachtige liederen uit Bosnië-Herzegovina. Uit de hoofdstad Sarajevo komt Damir Imamovic, een groot vertolker van dit genre. Een muzikant, zanger, tambur- en gitaarspeler en componist die al jaren optrad met zijn band Sevdah Takht. Op dit nieuwe album Singer of Tales horen we hem in een nieuwe bezetting.

In het boek The Singer of Tales (gepubliceerd door Albert Lord in 1960) vinden we een collectie liedjes die sinds 1930 door Milman Parry werden verzameld  Het boek is een testament voor de moderne sevdalinka. Het meervoud voor de sevdah, de schitterende liedjes uit Bosnië-Herzegovina met de herkenbare zangstijl, vol weemoed, uitgekiende frasering en Oriëntaalse versieringen. De muziek neemt een bijzondere plaats in, binnen de westerse liedkunst. De nieuwe CD Singer of Tales van Damir Imamovic is een ode aan dit boek en daarmee aan de sevdah.

Damir Imamovic wordt geboren in Sarajevo in een muzikale familie. Hij leert de sevdah kennen van zijn vader, die zanger en basgitarist is. Maar het vak leert hij ook van zijn grootvader, de legendarische zanger Zaim Imamovic. Na de IIde W.O. ontwikkelde Zaim Imamovic een nieuwe, vrijere interpretatie van de sevdah. Damir Imamovic borduurt voort op deze innovatie. Hij leert gitaarspelen, gaat filosofie studeren en start in 2004 met optreden. Twee jaar later verschijnt zijn trio-CD en muziek met zijn groep Sevdah Takht. Damir Imamovic heeft de sevdah in zijn bloed. Met zijn frasering heeft hij de perfecte balans gevonden tussen weemoed en melancholie. Een scheiding die uiterst smal en fragiel is. Je moet echt je vak, deze liedkunst, verstaan en begrijpen om je op deze scheidingslijn te bewegen en geloofwaardig over te komen. Damir Imamovic straalt de rust en zekerheid uit. Met veel verve zingt hij zowel traditionele als nieuw gecomponeerde stukken op zijn album Singer of Tales, met teksten die handelen over natuur, familie en liefde. De begeleiding is uitgekiend en doortastend sober. Twee strijkinstrumenten, de kemenche, de spike fiddle die rechtop wordt bespeeld, viool, basgitaar en Damir zelf op de tambur, langhalsluit. Damir Imamovic behoort tot de nieuwe generatie sevdah-zangers die nu al legendarisch genoemd mag worden!

The sevdah or sevdalinka are the beautiful songs from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Damir Imamovic, a great interpreter of this genre, was born in the capital Sarajevo. A musician, singer, tambur and guitar player and composer who performed with his band Sevdah Takht for years. On this new album Singer of Tales we hear him in a new line-up.

The book The Singer of Tales (published by Albert Lord in 1960) is a collection of songs collected by Milman Parry since 1930. The book is a testament of the modern sevdalinka. The plural for sevdah, the beautiful songs from Bosnia-Herzegovina, with the recognizable singing style full of melancholy, special phrasing and Oriental ornaments. This music has a special place in Western song art. Damir Imamovic’s new CD Singer of Tales is an ode to this book and thus to the sevdah.

Damir Imamovic was born in Sarajevo in a musical family. He learns the sevdah from his father, who was a singer and bass player. But also his grandfather, the legendary singer Zaim Imamovic, was very important for Damir. After the 2nd W.O. Zaim Imamovic developed a new, innovative interpretation of the sevdah. Damir Imamovic builds on this innovation. He learns to play the guitar, studies philosophy and starts performing in 2004. Two years later, his trio CD and music are released with his group Sevdah Takht. Damir Imamovic has the sevdah in his blood. In his way of singing he has found the perfect balance of melancholy, without being sentimental. A separation that is extremely narrow and fragile. You really need to know how to sing the sevdah songs. Damir Imamovic radiates with peace and security. With great verve he sings both traditional and newly composed pieces on his album Singer of Tales with lyrics that are about nature, family and love. The use of instruments is sophisticated and decisively sober. Two string instruments, the kemenche, the spike fiddle that is played upright, violin, bass guitar and Damir himself on the tambur, long-necked lute. Damir Imamovic belongs to the new generation of sevdah singers, who has already becomes legendary!
