De Zwitserse blokfluitiste en klaveciniste Corina Marti nam samen met harpiste Marie Nishiyama en Roger Helou, portatief speler (klein orgel), het album Winter op. In wisselende bezettingen horen we innemende, verstilde en anoniem gecomponeerde instrumentale composities uit de Middeleeuwen.

Wie een gevoel heeft voor muzikale subtiliteit, zal meteen opvallen hoe geweldig de combinatie van blokfluit, portatief, klavecimbel en harp kan zijn. Op het prachtig nieuwe album Winter van musicus Corina Marti horen we anonieme composities die midden 15de eeuw zijn opgetekend en verzameld in drie bundels. Het Buxheim Orgelboek en het Lochamer en Glogauer Liedboek. Alle drie de boeken zijn van onschatbare waarde geweest voor de ontwikkeling van de Europese liedkunst en vormen nu de basis voor deze CD. In die tijd, 15de eeuw, werd de bezetting (welk instrument welke partij moest spelen) nauwelijks voorgeschreven. De boeken waren bedoeld om musici kennis te laten maken met nieuwe muziek en ze alle vrijheid te geven instrument-combinaties zelf te kiezen. Wat men mooi vond of welke instrumenten er maar voor handen waren.

De composities op Winter worden transparant en elegant gespeeld. Ondanks dat de stukken hier en daar virtuoos zijn en de  snelle thema’s moeiteloos aan je voorbij snellen, behoudt de muziek toch zijn sereniteit die zo goed past bij de stilte van de winter. Op de thema’s wordt fraai geïmproviseerd met trillers en flattement: het licht dempen van de blokfluittoon waardoor de klank in toonhoogte zakt. Een speelwijze die in de barok heel populair werd. De combinatie blokfluit, klavecimbel en harp geeft een licht timbre, waardoor het lijkt of de muziek soms wordt opgetild en je mee zweeft in het spectrum met de ijle klanken. Het album heeft een mooie afwisseling in bezetting van harp en klavecimbel solo-stukken en blokfluit/harp en orgel (portatief). De blokfluit kleurt fraai met de klank van het portatief dat op zichzelf al een blokfluit-timbre in zich draagt. Naast veel anoniem werk horen we ook composities van de Franse componisten Guillaume Du Fay, Gilles Binchois en Antoine Busnois. Al is de winter van 2019/’20 al weer bijna voorbij, toch draagt deze prachtige CD bij aan de warmte die je zo graag voelt in dit jaargetijde!

The Swiss recorder player and harpsichordist Corina Marti recorded the album Winter together with harpist Marie Nishiyama and Roger Helou, a portative player (small organ). In varying instrumentations we hear charming, tranquil and anonymous instrumental compositions from the Middle Ages.

Anyone who has a sense of musical subtlety, will immediately notice how great the combination of recorder, organ, harpsichord and harp can be. On the beautiful new album Winter by musician Corina Marti, we hear anonymous compositions that were composed in the mid-15th century and collected in three bundles. The Buxheim organ book and the Lochamer and Glogauer songbook. All three books have been invaluable for the development of European song art and now form the basis for this CD. At the time, 15th century, the instrument combinations (which instrument plays which part) was hardly prescribed. The books were intended to give the musicians every freedom to become acquainted with the music and to compile instrument combinations themselves. What people liked or which instruments were available.

The compositions on the CD Winter are played transparently and elegantly. The pieces are virtuoso with fast played melodies, that effortlessly pass you by. The music still keeps its serenity that fits so well with the silence of winter time. The themes are beautifully improvised with vibrations and flattement: dampening the tone of the recorder, so that the sound drops in pitch. A way of playing that became very popular in the Baroque. The combination of recorder, harpsichord and harp gives a light timbre. It makes you feel like floating along with the lovely thin and fragile sounds in the spectrum. The album has a nice variety of harp and harpsichord solo pieces and recorder / harp and small organ (portative). The recorder colours beautifully with the sound of the small organ that already contains a recorder timbre. In addition to much anonymous work, we also hear compositions by the French composers Guillaume Du Fay, Gilles Binchois and Antoine Busnois. Even though the winter of 2019 / ’20 is almost over, this beautiful CD contributes to the warmth that you want to feel in this season!
