Sinds 2005 is Jonathan Hultén de leadgitarist van de Zweedse gothic rockband Tribulation. Op zijn debuut album, met de toepasselijke titel Chants from another place, horen we hem in een folk-metier dat aansluit bij o.a. de singer-songwriters John Martyn uit Engeland (zoals te horen in het openingslied Dance in the Road) en de Amerikaan Shawn Phillips (die we terughoren in The call to adventure). Inderdaad Liederen van een andere plek die zo totaal verschillen van het werk met de band Tribulation. Subtiel akoestisch gitaarspel met warme vocalen die fraai worden ondersteund door zijn eigen (door hem zelf gezongen) meerstemmige harmonieën. Deze meerstemmigheid klinkt zo fantastisch: stemmen met een warme klankkleur en lekker dicht bij elkaar gearrangeerd (close-harmony) en het gebruik van kopstem. Opmerkelijk zijn ook de melodieën die net even anders gaan dan je verwacht. Herkenbaar dus, maar met steeds een andere twist. Zoals het gebruik van chromatiek in The Mountain, de onverwachte akkoorden in Next Big Day of het volledig vocale Östbjörka Brudlåt (Bruilofslied). Overwegend staat de akoestische gitaar centraal (elektrisch op het instrumentale Outskirts), geregeld aangevuld met orgel, strings en piano (solo in The Fleeting World). De muziek van Jonathan Hultén is een wereldlijke, maar tegelijkertijd mythische aaneenschakeling van fabelachtige liedjes die je in een avontuurlijke reis meevoeren over bergen, wegen, buitenwijken en woestenijen. Chants from another place is the beautiful debut album by Swedish singer-songwriter Jonathan Hultén. For years he’s the lead guitarist of the heavy metal / gothic rock band Tribulation. But on this new CD Chants from another place he takes a completely new musical path.

Since 2005, Jonathan Hultén is the lead guitarist for the Swedish gothic rock band Tribulation. On his debut album, aptly titled Chants from another place, we hear him in a folk line-up that matches the singer-songwriters John Martyn from England (as in the opening song Dance in the Road) and the American Shawn Phillips (like the song The call to adventure). Indeed, songs from another place that are so completely different from the work with the band Tribulation. Subtle acoustic guitar strings with warm vocals that are beautifully supported by his own polyphonic vocal harmonies. This polyphony sounds really fantastic: voices with a warm timbre and nicely arranged close together (close harmony) and the use of the falsetto voice. Noteworthy are the melodies that go slightly different than you expect. So recognizable, but with a different twist. Such as the use of chromatic in The Mountain, the unexpected chords in Next Big Day or the completely vocal a capella song Östbjörka Brudlåt (Weddingsong). Mostly the acoustic guitar is in the centre of the music (electric on the instrumental Outskirts) regularly supplemented with organ, strings and piano (solo piano in The Fleeting World). Jonathan Hultén’s music is a secular, yet mythical series of fabulous songs that take you on an adventurous journey across mountains, roads, suburbs and wastelands. Legendary album!
