De Zuid-Franse zanger Manu Theron begon met de groep Gache Empega, startte zijn Lo Cor de Plana en komt nu met zijn nieuwste project, het kwartet Polifonic System. In elke groep staat de vocale muziek centraal, meerstemmig met bijzondere, theatrale en eigenzinnige begeleidingen.

Polifonic System, ja dat is het. En wat voor een. Stuwend, met opzwepende ritmes, bevlogen uitgevoerd met een enorme dosis energie, af en toe aangevuld met elektronische ritmes en effecten. Op Totem Simic staat de vocale muziek centraal en dan vooral die uit Zuid-Frankrijk. Liederen uit Occitanië zijn van oorsprong éénstemmig maar zijn door Polifonic System meerstemmig gearrangeerd en worden dus met ritmes begeleid maar ook af en toe met fluit, snaarinstrumenten en doedelzak. De muziek blijft onmiskenbaar folk, met hier en daar gebruik van de bourdon, de liggende kwint (5-tonen-interval) die als een soort begeleiding in de melodieën verborgen ligt en door de thema’s heen zweeft. Zoals veel moderne Franse (folk)muziek zitten ook deze stukken vol humoristische fragmenten. Het (om)draaien van het ritme, aanvullen met vette synthesizer sounds (Rigodons un pue), de stem met effecten vervormen of de magische la-la melodie in Divertigem. En in La Pastora zelfs een muzikale knipoog naar de Balkan beats. Deze effecten dragen bij aan de originaliteit van de muziek en worden strak en overtuigend uitgevoerd waarbij je je soms waagt in een heerlijk doldwaas muzikale achtbaan. Niet zo vreemd want Manu Theron bewees al eerder dat hij met een groep als Lo Cor de la Plana een ongekende show neerzet waarbij in de begeleiding handen, voeten, vloer en meubilair (stoel en tafel) ritmisch worden gebruikt. Ongekend origineel. Polifonic System gaat nog een stukje verder, waarmee het woord polifonic is uitgelegd. Voortreffelijke muziek die je lekker hard moet afspelen.

Years ago the southern French singer Manu Theron started the Gache Empega group, started his Lo Cor de Plana and now comes with his latest project, the Polifonic System quartet. In every group vocal music is central, polyphonic arranged with special, theatrical and quirky accompaniments.

Polifonic System, yes that’s what it is. A great band. Propulsive, with uplifting rhythms, enthusiastically performed with a huge dose of energy, occasionally supplemented with electronic rhythms and effects. On the album Totem Simic the vocal music is central and especially the songs from Southern of France. Songs from Occitania are originally single-voiced but are arranged by the Polifonic System in multiple voices and are accompanied with rhythms, but also occasionally with flute, string instruments and bagpipe. The music remains unmistakably folk, with the occasional use of the bourdon, the reclining fifth (5-tone interval) that lies hidden in the melodies as a kind of accompaniment and floats through the themes. Like many modern French (folk) music, these pieces are full of humorous fragments. The twisting of the rhythm, supplementing with great synthesizer sounds (Rigodons un pue), the twisting of the voice with effects, the magic la-la melodie in Divertigem.  Even in La Pastora with a touch of Balkan beats. These effects contribute to the originality of the music are performed tightly and convincingly, whereby you sometimes venture out in a wonderfully crazy musical roller coaster.
