From Baku to New York City heet de nieuwe CD van pianist Shahin Novrasli uit Azerbeidzjan. Een titel die volledig de lading dekt, aangezien hij muziek speelt die georiënteerd is op de muziek uit zijn geboorteland Azerbeidzjan, maar waarop ook jazz-stukken zijn te horen uit de Amerikaanse jazz-cultuur.

Shahin Novrasli is een bijzonder getalenteerde pianist. Als 5-jarig jongetje kreeg hij al pianoles aan de Bulbul Music School en de Hajibeyoy Academy of Music. Toen hij 11 jaar was, gaf hij concerten met het Symfonie-orkest in de Azerbeidzjan State Philharmonic Hall. Net zoals zijn landgenote Aziza Mustafa Zadeh improviseert Shahin Novrasli o.a. op de traditionele muziek uit Azerbeidzjan, de mugham: modale muziek die gebaseerd is op een toonladder, op een reeks noten. Dat maakt zijn muziek bijna ongrijpbaar voor westerse oren. Hierdoor krijgen de stukken een melancholische inslag, vol weemoed en melancholie, zoals te horen in Shahin’s Day en bijzonder fraai in Memories. De sfeer in deze composities verklaart Baku (hoofdstad van Azerbeidzjan) in de titel van de CD. Zijn touché en speelzekerheid is fenomenaal. Een manier van spelen die aansluit bij het spel van de Amerikaanse jazzgigant Keith Jarrett. In frasering, versiering en opbouw horen we Jarrett’s aanpak terug. Zoals in de langzame ontwikkeling, de ornamenten (waarbij Novrasli zijn noten zorgvuldig kiest, prachtig omspeelt en kleurt), en de brede virtuositeit waarbij het soms lijkt alsof je drie handen hoort spelen. In alle stukken hoor je tussen de noten door de muziek uit zijn geboorteland Azerbeidzjan. Soms heel duidelijk en dan weer als een blauwdruk in de improvisaties. Een prachtig timbre dat zijn muziek zo karakteristiek maakt. Naast enkele solo-stukken wordt Novrasli op From Baku to New York City stuwend bijgestaan door bassist James Cammack en drummer Herlin Riley. Een bruisend trio dat hecht op elkaar is afgestemd en ingespeeld in een coherente samenwerking!

From Baku to New York City is the title of the new CD of pianist Shahin Novrasli from Azerbaijan. A title that fully covers the music. He plays music that is oriented from his native Azerbaijan, but he plays also jazz pieces from the American jazz culture.

Shahin Novrasli is a particularly talented pianist. As a 5-year-old boy, he already got piano lessons at the Bulbul Music School and the Hajibeyoy Academy of Music. When he was 11 years old, he gave concerts with the Symphony Orchestra in the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Hall. Just like his fellow countrywoman Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, Shahin Novrasli improvises, among other things, on traditional music from Azerbaijan, the mugham: modal music based on a scale, on a series of tones. That makes his music wonderfully elusive for Western ears. This gives the music a fine touch, full of melancholy as can be heard in Shahin’s Day and particularly beautiful in Memories. Baku (capital of Azerbaijan) explains the atmosphere in these compositions in the title of the CD. His touché and play certainty are phenomenal. A way of playing that fits to the American jazz giant Keith Jarrett. We hear Jarrett’s approach in phrasing, ornamentation and construction. Such as in the slow development, the ornaments (where Novrasli carefully chooses his notes, beautifully played and colored), and the broad virtuosity where it sometimes seems as if you’re listening to three hands playing. It is all equally beautiful. Shahin Novrasli also plays jazz standards (referring to New York City in the title of his CD) such as 52nd Street Theme, Stella by Starlight and Salt Peanuts. The last piece stands out with a stunning intro. In all the pieces you can hear music from his native country Azerbaijani, in between the notes. Sometimes very clear and then again as a blueprint in the improvisations. A beautiful timbre that makes his music so characteristic. In addition to a few solo pieces, Shahin Novrasli is assisted on From Baku to New York City by bass player James Cammack and drummer Herlin Riley.
