Het AKA Trio bestaat uit drie muzikanten, uit drie verschillende landen. Gitarist Antonio Forcione uit Italië, kora-speler (West-Afrikaanse harp) Seckou Keita uit Senegal en percussionist Adriano Adewale uit Brazilië. Op Joy spelen ze een wereldlijke crossover waarin ze de muziek uit hun geboorteland bevlogen verwerken.

Het AKA Trio speelt op Joy een magische mix van Afrikaanse muziek, gelardeerd met new folk aangevuld met subtiele percussie. De muziek herbergt veel muzikale verrassingen die verstopt zitten in de arrangementen. Zo is bijvoorbeeld het B-gedeelte in Kanou typisch folk-georiënteerd, terwijl het stuk zelf echt Afrikaans is. In het daaropvolgende Baracoa is het precies omgekeerd. Daar is het de folk die de boventoon voert. In de compositie Saudade is de Braziliaanse signatuur goed te horen in het ritme en (voor de liefhebber) het gebruik van majeur-7 akkoorden die zo typerend zijn voor de Braziliaanse muziek. Soms zijn de melodieën goed waarneembaar terwijl in een ander stuk het de warme klanken zijn die als geheel het thema vormen en een prettige sfeer creëren. De muziek is sereen, open van klank en zet aan tot nadenken, mijmeren en fantaseren. Ja, zelfs tot het visualiseren van beelden, aangezien de muziek met gemak filmmuziek zou kunnen zijn. In enkele stukken wordt er gezongen, soms een tekst al dan niet aangevuld met achtergrondzang. Prachtig zijn de omspelingen van de kora, goed te horen in Il bambino e l’Aquilone en Empathy. Het album Joy is met liefde gemaakt, met zorg gearrangeerd en geproduceerd met respect voor elkaars muzikale achtergrond. Wat een weelde om zo met elkaars erfgoed om te gaan: daar mag menig president een voorbeeld aan nemen!

The AKA Trio consists of three musicians from three different countries. Guitarist Antonio Forcione from Italy, kora player (West African harp) Seckou Keita from Senegal and percussionist Adriano Adewale from Brazil. On Joy they play a worldly crossover. With enthusiasm they put the music from their homeland in the compositions.

On the album Joy the AKA Trio plays a magical mix of African music larded with new folk and subtle percussion. The music is full of surprises that are hidden in the arrangements. For example, one part Kanou is typically folk-oriented while the piece itself is filled with African flavour. In the following composition Baracoa it is exactly the opposite. There it is the folk who predominate. In the composition Saudade, the Brazilian signature can be clearly heard in the rhythm and (for the experts) the use of major 7 chords that are so typical for Brazilian music. Sometimes the melodies can be heard clearly, while in another piece it is the warm sounds that creates a pleasant atmosphere. The music is serene, open of sound and makes you think, musing and fantasizing. Yes, even to visualizing images that come up in your mind, because the music easily could be film music. A few pieces are songs, sometimes with or without background vocals. The ornaments of the kora are beautiful, and can be heard in Il bambino e l’Aquilone and Empathy. The album Joy was made with love, carefully arranged and produced with respect for each other’s musical background. How great it is to hear how these fine musicians have respect for each other’s heritage: many leaders of the planet can take that as an example!
