Percussionist en zanger Xabier Diaz komt uit Galicië, het mooiste stukje Europa waar bijzondere folk vandaan komt. Hij maakte enkele solo-albums en werkte samen met de groten uit de (Galicische) folk, waaronder zangeres Guadi Galego en gaita (doedelzak)speler Kepa Junkera.

Folk uit Galicië (Noord-west Spanje) kenmerkt zich door de prachtig strakke unisono vrouwenzang met percussie-begeleiding (tamboerijn) zoals we die tegenkomen bij de groepen Leila en Ialma, de gaïta (doedelzak) vinden we bij de doedelzak-virtuoos Kepa Junkea (uit Baskenland) en de zeer welluidende (lyrische) melodieën hoorden we bij Luar Na Lubre en Berrogüetto (met zangeresGuadi Galego) waar Xabier Diaz vanaf 2008 zes jaar deel van uitmaakt. Deze veelzijdige muzikant brengt het met zijn groep Adufeiras de Salitre het allemaal samen op zijn album ‘Noró, Algunhas Músicas do norte’. Naast de tamboerijn horen we ook de adufe (foto), een vierkante handtrommel, dubbelzijdig gespannen met een dierenhuid, met een ietwat dof geluid. Te horen tijdens de (unisono) vrouwenzang in ‘Mazurcas de Noró’ en ‘Flor de maio’ met prachtige adufe en accordeon begeleiding. De gaïta in het slotstuk ‘Dúas carballesas’ en de heerlijke melodieën van ‘Voa o aire’ en ‘A danza de Conceptiòn’. Deze liedjes hebben allemaal die prachtige weemoedige folkinvloed die zo speciaal is voor Galicië. Naast percussie, gaïta, horen we ook piano, fluit, draailier en viool in de arrangementen. Leider en innitior Xabier Diaz is naast een begenadigd percussionist ook een voortreffelijk zanger die zingt met een innemend timbre. Zijn stem straalt gemak en vitale eenvoud uit waardoor het overkomt alsof het hem geen moeite kost. Met dit tweede solo-album geeft Xabier Diaz weer een enorme push voor de geweldige muziek uit Noord-Spanje. Geen wonder dat hij de eerste prijs voor het beste Galicische lied won tijdens de eerste editie van de Awards aRitmar.

The residence of percussionist and singer Xabier Diaz is Galicia. One of the most beautiful parts of Europe where special folk music comes from. He recorded several solo albums and collaborated with great musicians of (Galician) folk music, including singer Guadi Galego and gaita (bagpipe) player Kepa Junkera from the Basque country.

Folk music from Galicia (north-west Spain) is characterized by the beautiful tight unison women vocals with percussion accompaniment (tambourine) as we encounter in the groups Leila en Ialma. Like Kepa Junkea who’s a virtuoso on the gaïta (bagpipe). Also the very melodic (lyrical) melodies are beautiful from Galicia, like Na Lubre and Berrogüetto (with singer Guadi Galego). Xabier Diaz was a member of this splendid band from 2008 to 2014. This versatile musician Xabier Diaz brings it all together with his group Adufeiras de Salitre on his album ‘Noró, Algunhas Músicas do norte’. In addition to the tambourine, we also hear the adufe, a square hand drum, stretched on both sides with an animal skin, with a somewhat dull sound. Diaz’ new album is full of musical surprises. The wonderful (unison) women vocals in ‘Mazurcas de Noró’ and ‘Flor de maio’ with the beautiful adufe and accordion accompagnement. The gaïta in the final piece ‘Dúas carballesas’ and the lovely melodies of ‘Voa o aire’ and ‘A danza de Conceptiòn’. All these songs have that wonderful melancholic folk influence that you find in the music of Galicia. In addition to percussion and gaïta, we also hear piano, flute, hurdy-gurdy and violin in the arrangements. Leader and initiator Xabier Diaz is not only a gifted percussionist but also an excellent singer who sings with an engaging timbre. His voice exudes with ease and vital spontaneity, which makes it sound very easy. With this second solo album, Xabier Diaz gives another huge push for the wonderful music from northern Spain. No wonder, he won the first prize for the best song in Galician music during the first edition of the Awards aRitmar.
