Met hun nieuwe album ‘Heritage’ gaat het koor The Bulgarian Voices Angelite terug in de Bulgaarse zangtraditie. Een prachtig vocale traditie die in de jaren ’50 werd ontwikkeld door Philip Koutev (1903-1982) en zich kenmerkt door bijzondere harmonieën.

Met ongelooflijk mooie en wervelende harmonieën laat het vrouwenkoor Bulgarian Voices Angelite (BVA) weer van zich horen. Deze harmonische aanpak werd ontwikkeld door Philip Koutev die lokale melodieën noteerde en ze harmoniseerde voor vrouwenstemmen met o.a. dissonante samenklanken, die niet alleen fantastisch klinken maar ook nog eens het vocale kenmerk is geworden van de Bulgaarse muziek. Het BVA nam in het verleden naast kerstmuziek ook opnames op met de boventoonzang van het trio Huun Huur Tu, het Moskou Art Trio met pianist Misha Alperin, Bobby Mc Ferrin en het Roemeense blaasorkest Fanfare Ciocarlia. Op ‘Heritage’ gaat het koor terug naar de traditionele a capella vrouwenzang met nieuw repertoire. Stukken die handelen over de natuur, liefde en muziek. Zeer bijzonder is de verscheidenheid in de arrangementen waarin solo-stukken opgenomen zijn, koraal-composties klinken; zoals het religieuze ‘A pray for the fellowman’ en de snerpende dissonanten waarbij de melodie een kleine secunde (halve toon) lager zit dan de tweede stem. Dat laatste geeft de melodie extra diepgang en is ongekend fraai. Daarnaast is de tweede stem met enige regelmaat één liggende toon die als een soort bourdon de melodie ‘doorklieft’ (‘Three nightingales are singing’). Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan in de Armeense muziek waar de duduk (dubbelriet) een ‘drone’ speelt die ook de melodie mysterieus begeleidt. Al meer dan 30 jaar wordt het Bulgarian Voices Angelite geleid door Tanja Andreeva en steeds slaagt ze er weer in om de muziek iets extra’s te geven. Zo ook te vinden op deze CD ‘Heritage’ waar ook gebruikt wordt gemaakt van voetenwerk in ‘Two songs for Lazar’s day’), mondpercussie in ‘The bass drum beats’ en random-zang in het sluitstuk ‘My love’. Voor wie een beetje thuis is in de Bulgaarse muziek, is dit heerlijk thuiskomen!

The choir The Bulgarian Voices Angelite goes back into the Bulgarian singing tradition on their new album ‘Heritage’. A beautiful vocal tradition with special harmonies and amazing voices. It was developed in the 1950s by Philip Koutev (1903-1982).

With incredibly swirling harmonies, the Bulgarian Voices Angelite women’s choir creates history. This harmonic approach was developed by Philip Koutev who wrote down local melodies and harmonized for women voices with, among other things, dissonant harmonies, which not only sound fantastic but also have become the characteristic of Bulgarian vocal music. In the past, the Bulgarian Voices Angelite also recorded Christmas music as well as recordings with the overtones with the trio Huun Huur Tu, the Moscow Art Trio with pianist Misha Alperin, Bobby Mc Ferrin and the Romanian wind orchestra Fanfare Ciocarlia. On ‘Heritage’ the choir goes back to the traditional a cappella female vocals with new repertoire. Pieces about nature, love and music. Very special is the variety in the arrangements in which solo pieces are included, choral compositions; such as the religious ‘A pray for the fellowman’ and the fine dissonant tones in which the melody is a small second (semitone) lower than the second voice. This gives the melody extra depth and is incredibly beautiful. In addition, the second voice is, with some regularity, one-tone that ‘cuts through’ the melody like a bourdon (‘Three nightingales are singing’). We find something similar in Armenian music where the duduk (double reed) plays a ‘drone’ that also accompanies the melody mysteriously. For more than 30 years, the Bulgarian Voices Angelite has been led by Tanja Andreeva and she always succeeds in giving the music something extra. Also to be found on this CD ‘Heritage’. The vocalists use feet percussion in ‘Two songs for Lazar’s day’, mouth percussion in ‘The bass drum beats’ and a kind of random vocals in the final piece ‘My love’. For those who love Bulgarian music, it’s great to be ‘back home’!
