De Franse multi-instrumentalist Sylvain Texier komt onder de naam Ô Lake met zijn nieuwe album ‘Refuge’. Een instrumentale CD waarop hij zelf keyboards speelt en de programmering verzorgt en wordt bijgestaan door percussionist Federico Climovich, cellist David Harlé, violist Paul Rouger en altviolist Vincent Dormieu.

‘Ô Lake’ is dus het nieuwe project van de Franse componist Sylvain Texier. Instrumentale muziek waar de beelden verborgen liggen in melodie, ritme en sound-scapes. Waar weidse klanken een metafoor vormen voor film of documentaire. ‘Ô Lake’ staat vol weemoedige muziek met een traag verloop, waar een strijktrio van viool, altviool en cello en lichte percussie een perfecte combinatie blijkt te zijn. En zeker, de composities zijn geïnspireerd door het werk van Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman, Michael Rother, Ludovico Einaudi of Philip Glass. De muziek van deze componisten bestaat uit kleine muzikale miniatuurtjes, korte melodische fragmenten van 4 of 8 maten die steeds worden herhaald en waarop wordt gevarieerd. Waar de instrumentatie wordt uitgebreid en wordt aangevuld met een melodische of ritmische variatie. Een compositie-techniek die zeer doeltreffend is, zoals ook weer blijkt op het innemende ‘Ô Lake’. Door het rustige verloop en de herkenbaarheid van de composities word je meegevoerd door melodie en samenklank. De muziek op dit nieuwe album van Sylvain Texier is niet grensverleggend, maar de composities zijn prachtig, warm van kleur, licht melancholisch met een groot ‘gevoel van thuiskomen’. En dat is toch waar je graag wilt zijn!

The French multi-instrumentalist Sylvain Texier released under a new name Ô Lake his new album ‘Refuge’. A fine instrumental collection on which he plays keyboards and provides programming and is assisted by percussionist Federico Climovich, cellist David Harlé, violinist Paul Rouger and viola player Vincent Dormieu.

‘Ô Lake’ is the new project of the French composer Sylvain Texier. Instrumental music where ‘mind images’ are hidden in melody, rhythm and soundscapes. Where vast sounds create a metaphor for film or documentary. ‘Ô Lake’ is full of wistful music in a slow movement, where a string trio of violin, viola and cello and small percussion turns out to be a perfect combination. And certainly, the compositions have inspirations from the music of Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman, Michael Rother, Ludovico Einaudi or Philip Glass. The way of composing consists of short musical miniatures, short melodic fragments of 4 or 8 bars, that are repeated and varied. Where the instrumentation is expanded added with a melodic or rhythmic variations. A great composition technique that is very effective, like on ‘Ô Lake’. You are carried away by the slow musical progress and the recognisability of the compositions and wonderful melodies. The music is not groundbreaking, but the compositions are beautiful, warm in color, slightly melancholic with a great sense of a ‘coming-home-feeling’. And that is where you want to be, home!
