Robert Tannahill (1774 – 1810) was een Schots dichter wiens muziek nu te vinden is op het album ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’. Op innovatieve wijze zingen en spelen diverse artiesten zijn werk dat werd aangevuld met composities door initiator Dr. Fred Freeman, doorspekt met Ierse, Joodse, jazz en klassieke invloeden.

Wie van (Schotse) folk houdt wordt hier heerlijk op zijn wenken bediend. Op dit ‘Volume IV’ staan maar liefst 20 liedjes die worden gebracht door diverse artiesten. Robert Tannahill was een actief dichter die medeoprichter was van de Paisley Burns Club in 1807. Hij had enig succes met zijn gedichten die gepubliceerd werden in The Scots Magazine, begin 19de eeuw en een verzameling gedichten en liedjes verscheen in een oplage van 900 stuks die in een mum van tijd was uitverkocht. Toch kon Tannahill het niet verkroppen dat een uitgebreide verzameling van zijn werk niet werd gepubliceerd door uitgevers in Greenock en Edinburgh. Dat leidde bij hem tot moedeloosheid en totale vertwijfeling. Hij verbrandde veel zijn manuscripten en pleegde uiteindelijk zelfmoord in het Paisley kanaal.

De innemende muziek van Robert Tannahill is nu te horen is op ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’. Er staan liedjes op die van Tannahill’s hand zijn maar we horen ook werk van initiator Fred Freeman (foto). De muziek wordt gebracht door diverse artiesten. De prachtige stemmen van Claire Hastings, Fiora Hunter, Brian Ó hEadhra en Ross Kennedy die we ook al tegenkwamen bij The Tannahill Weavers. In wisselende bezettingen horen we gitaar, viool, mandoline, keyboards, accordeon, tin whistle, cittern (grote mandoline) en lichte percussie. De teksten handelen over afscheid, vriendschap, de rondtrekkende muzikant en natuurlijk de liefde. De muziek is onmiskenbaar folk maar er zijn ook invloeden hoorbaar van jazz (‘Return o gallant sons…’ en ‘The wandering bard’) en klezmer (‘Killoch burn’ en ‘Faithfull Ellen More’). Dat maakt van ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’ een gevarieerde collectie en een zeer geslaagd project voor de breed georiënteerde muziek- (folk-)liefhebber. En wie er maar geen genoeg van kan krijgen; tussen 2006 en 2013 verschenen al de delen ‘Volume I, II en III’, die nog steeds beschikbaar zijn.

Robert Tannahill (1774 – 1810) was a Scottish poet whose music is recorded for the album ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’. Various artists sing and play in an innovative way his work supplemented by compositions by the initiator Dr. Fred Freeman, with Irish, Jewish, jazz and classical influences.

For those who love (Scottish) folk will be delighted. On this ‘Volume IV’ there are 20 songs recorded by various artists. Robert Tannahill was an active poet and co-founded the Paisley Burns Club in 1807. He had little success with his poems that were published in The Scots Magazine in the early 19th century and a collection of poems and songs appeared in an edition of 900 copies that were sold out in no time. Yet Tannahill could not accept that an extensive collection was not published by publishers in Greenock and Edinburgh. That led to despondency and total despair. He burned a lot of his manuscripts and committed suicide in the Paisley Canal.

The lovely music of Robert Tannahill is recorded for ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’. Most of the songs were written by Tannahill, but there are also compositions by initiator and producer Fred Freeman (photo). The music is played by various artists. The beautiful voices for example of Claire Hastings, Fiora Hunter, Brian Ó hEadhra and Ross Kennedy that we also encountered at The Tannahill Weavers. In varying instrumentation we hear guitar, violin, mandolin, keyboards, accordion, tin whistle, cittern (large mandolin) and some percussion. The lyrics are about farewell, friendship, the travelling musician and of course love. The music is unmistakably folk but you can hear influences of jazz (‘Return o gallant sons …’ and ‘The wandering bard’) and klezmer (‘Killoch burn’ and ‘Faithfull Ellen More’). That makes ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill – Volume IV’ a varied collection and a very successful project for music and folk lovers. And if you can’t get enough of it, ‘Volume I, II and III’ are still available. These were released between 2006 and 2013.
