Het trio Blondel is voor de CD ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ uitgebreid tot kwintet. In een bezetting van blokfluit, schalmei, doedelzak, trompet en slagwerk speelt het ensemble prachtige bewerkingen van muziek uit 14de en 15de eeuw.

Het album ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ is geïnspireerd op de geschriften van de in Venetië geboren schrijfster Christine de Pizan (1364-1430). Haar vader, de medicus Thomas de Pizan, vertrok op verzoek Karel de V naar Parijs om aan het Franse hof te komen werken. Zijn dochter Christine verhuist mee, groeit op in de Franse hoofdstad en trouwt op 15-jarige leeftijd met Etienne du Castel. Als zij 26 jaar is overlijdt achtereenvolgens haar vader, haar man Etienne en een van haar zoons. Nu staat Christine er alleen voor en verdiept zich in het schrijversvak waarmee ze in haar onderhoud kan voorzien. In die tijd zeer bijzonder, zeker voor een vrouw. Van haar hand zijn o.a. ‘Livre de la Cité des Dames’ (Boek van de stad der vrouwen) en ‘The Book of Fayttes of Arms and of Chivalrye’. Christine de Pizan is de inspiratiebron voor deze prachtige CD ‘Of arms and a Woman- Late medieval music’ door het Engels ensemble Blondel.

Met een prachtige en innemende trefzekerheid vertolkt Blondel de composities van Dufay, Binchois, Ciconia, Codier, Machaut, Solage, Morten, Bedyngham, Lanidi, Des Prés en anonieme componisten. In wisselende bezettingen horen we blokfluiten, doedelzakken, percussie en schalmei. Vooral schalmei en doedelzak zijn uiterst geschikt voor oorlog-gerelateerde-muziek die te vinden is op ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’. Beide instrumenten klinken hard, doordringend en hebben een lange reikwijdte. Ze worden aangevuld met trompet en slagwerk wat resulteert in heldhaftige stukken zoals ‘A chaval, tous homme a cheval’ of ‘Reveille vous piccars’. Deze werken kleuren fraai naast de (duo)werken op blokfluit zoals ‘Le ray au soleyl’ en het schitterende ‘Pues serviçio vos desplaze (cacionero de palacio)’. In het begeleidende boekje is veel achtergrondinformatie te vinden over de gespeelde werken. Deze uitleg en de muziek op ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ geven je een bijna melancholische weemoed naar een heldhaftige tijd, waar veel oorlog werd gevoerd en mensen elkaar het leven zuur maakten, maar waar ook verdomd mooie muziek werd geschreven die fantastisch wordt uitgevoerd door deze jonge vakmusici.

For their new album ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ the trio Blondel has been extended to a quintet. They use the recorder, shawm, bagpipe, trumpet and percussion and play wonderful arrangements of music from the 14th and 15th century.

The album ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ is inspired by the writings of the Venice-born writer Christine de Pizan (1364-1430). Her father, the physician Thomas de Pizan, moved on request of Charles V to Paris to work at the French court. His daughter Christine grew up in the French capital and married Etienne du Castel at the age of 15. When she was 26, her father, her husband Etienne and one of her sons died. Now Christine was on her own and she decided to become a professional writer. At that time very special, especially for woman. She wrote ‘Livre de la Cité des Dames’ (Book of the City of Women) and ‘The Book of Fayttes of Arms and of Chivalry’. Christine de Pizan is the inspiration for this beautiful album ‘Of arms and a Woman- Late medieval music’ by Blondel.

With an exciting performance Blondel plays the compositions of Dufay, Binchois, Ciconia, Codier, Machaut, Solage Morten, Bedyngham, Lanidi, Des Prés and anonymous composers. In varying line-ups we hear the recorders, bagpipes, percussion and shawm. Especially the shawm and bagpipes are very suitable for war related music that can be found on ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’. Both instruments sound loud, penetrating and have a long range, added with trumpet and percussion. The results are heroic pieces such as ‘A chaval, tous homme a cheval’ or ‘Reveille vous piccars’. These compositions nicely color next to the (duo) compositions on recorder like ‘Le ray au soleyl’ and the beautiful ‘Pues serviçio vos desplaze (cacionero de palacio)’. In the accompanying booklet you can find a lot of background information about the works that have been played. This explanation and the music on ‘Of arms and a Woman – Late medieval music’ give you an almost melancholic feeling to a heroic era. A time with a lot of wars. But it was also a time in which beautiful music was written, today performed by these young excellent and professional musicians.
