Een compositie-opdracht voor het schrijven van muziek en deze uit te voeren tijdens een concert op het NSJ-Festival in Rotterdam. Het prachtige resultaat staat nu op de CD ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’.

De van origine Duitse pianist Philpp Rüttgers geeft tegenwoordig les aan het Conservatorium te Arnhem waar hij zelf ook studeerde. Hij is een productief musicus, componist en bandleider van het KAMA Quartet en de Phil’s Music Laboratory. Hij gaat met veel succes volledig zijn eigen muzikale weg en het is daarom ook niet zo verwonderlijk dat deze eigenzinnige musicus de kans kreeg zich te presenteren op het North Sea Jazz Festival 2018 met zijn nieuwe project ‘Twists Of H.C. Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’. De live opnames (godzijdank zonder ‘solo’-applaus) zijn nu integraal te beluisteren op deze nieuwe CD, opgenomen op 12 juli 2018.

In het Berlijn van jaren ’80 luisterde de kleine Philipp naar de sprookjes van Hans Christian Andersen die hem werden voorgelezen door zijn moeder. Nu, jaren later, inspireren deze verhalen hem tot beeldende en soms mystieke muziek. ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’ is inderdaad een twist, een mix van diverse stijlen. Zijn composities hebben een programmatische achtergrond, zoals je dat ook tegenkomt in het werk van bijvoorbeeld Modest Moessorgski (Schilderijententoonstelling) of in het werk ‘Ma Vlast’ (Mijn Vaderland) van de Tsjech Bedřich Smetana. Tegen een doordachte compositorische achtergrond, die een muzikale vertaling is van het werk van de Deense verhalenverteller, horen we strak gecomponeerde muziek met ruimte voor improvisatie. Soms stevig met ferme ritmiek en dan weer zwevend en onbestemd, waarmee een soort mistige atmosfeer wordt gecreëerd. Opvallend is de ‘enigmatische’ stem van Heidi Heidelberg. Serene en kristal heldere vocalen, zowel fonetisch (‘The emperor and the nightingale’) als het snel switchen tussen borst en kopstem (jodelen). In ‘She is good for nothing’ trekt Heidelberg alle registers open en blijkt dat we hier te maken met een stemkunstenares die zo gemakkelijk schakelt tussen pop, opera en improvisatie. Bijzonder fraai is ook het vioolspel van Oene van Geel op zijn quintone (5-snarige altviool) die zijn solo’s unisono fonetische meezingt zoals we dat ook tegenkwamen bij de jazz contrabassisten Major Holley en Slam Stewart. Daarnaast horen we cellist Jörg Brinkmann en drummer Mark Schilders en natuurlijk pianist Philipp Rüttgers die de inspirerende muziek componeerde voor zijn nieuwe album ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’.

Pianist Philipp Rüttgers received the ‘North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment’ in 2018, a composition commission for writing music and perform his music with an new band at the NSJ Festival in Rotterdam (Netherlands). The beautiful result is now on his CD ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’.

Pianist Philpp Rüttgers grew up in Berlin. Nowadays he’s teacher at the Conservatory in Arnhem, where he also studied. He is a prolific musician, composer and bandleader of the KAMA Quartet and the Phil’s Music Laboratory. With lost of success he completely creates his own musical way and it is therefore no wonder that this idiosyncratic musician got the chance to present himself at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2018 with his new project ‘Twists Of H.C. Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’. A live recording, July 12, 2018, (thank God, without ‘solo’ applause) is now released on his new splendid CD.

As a child, little Philipp listened to the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. These stories were read to him by his mother in Berlin in the 1980s. These stories inspired him to visual and sometimes mythical music. ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’ is indeed a twist , a mix of various styles. His compositions have a programmatic background, as you also encounter in compositions like ‘Pictures from an Exhibition’ by Modest Mussorgsky or in ‘Ma Vlast’ (My Fatherland) composed by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. In a kind of compositional background, and a musical translation of the work of the Danish storyteller Andersen, we hear wonderful composed music with room for improvisation. Sometimes solid with firm rhythms and then suddenly floating and creating a fine mystical atmosphere. Striking is the mythical voice of Heidi Heidelberg. Serene and crystal clear vocals, both phonetic (‘The emperor and the nightingale’) and quickly switching between chest and head voice (yodeling). In the song ‘She is good for nothing’ Heidelberg she switches easily from pop to opera and improvisation. The violin playing by Oene van Geel on his quintone (5-string viola) is very beautiful. In his solo’s we hear him sing unison along like double bass players Major Holley and Slam Stewart did. We also hear cellist Jörg Brinkmann and drummer Mark Schilders and of course pianist Philipp Rüttgers who composed this inspiring music for his new album ‘Twists of H.C Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales’.
