Al decennia lang is Luar:Na:Lubre een van de meest inspirerende bands uit Galicië (noord-Spanje). Ook op hun nieuwste album ‘Ribeira Sacra’, vernoemd naar een streek in Galicië, weerspiegelt dit septet een van mooiste plekken van Europa, met innoverende (Keltisch georïenteerde) folk.

Begin jaren ’90 zorgde Mike Oldfield voor een wereldwijde tour die de naamsbekendheid van Luar:Na:Lubre’ een enorme push heeft gegeven. Als hij in 1996 ook nog het lied ‘O son do ar’ covert met de titel ‘Song of the Sun’, gaat het muzikale balletje echt rollen voor deze noord-Spaanse band. Terecht, want Luar:Na:Lubre is een van de beste Galicische groepen. Opgericht in 1986 in A Coruña, een kustplaats in het noorden van Galicië, ontwikkelt de band de Galicische folk tot een geheel eigen stijl. Alhoewel hun muziek Keltisch georiënteerd is en zeker kenmerken heeft van west-Franse en Ierse folk, speelt de groep op innovatieve wijze. In een line-up van doedelzak, draailier, toetsen, accordeon, viool, percussie, fluit, blazers en akoestisch gitaar creëert de groep een intense klank. De composities zijn krachtig gearrangeerd, met een duidelijke structuur, fraaie tegen-melodieën en opvallende zang. Krachtige stemmen die in hun eigenheid net zo herkenbaar zijn als de flamenco vocalen, de fado of het Franse chanson. De inspiratie voor het album Ribeira Sacra, (refereert aan de gelijknamige streek) start in het klooster van San Pedro de Rosas waar Luar:Na:Lubre in 2018 hun nieuwe album opneemt. Xavier Ferreiro, de percussionist, gaat op zoek naar melodieën uit Ribeira Sacra, naar lokale muziek die worden verwerkt in de composities. Als inspiratie dienen ook de feesten zoals carnaval en verhalen waaronder de legende van Felos de Maceda. Bovendien verwerkt hij kerk-, straat- en natuurgeluiden in hun muziek, wat de stukken iets extra’s geeft en ze dichterbij de omgeving brengt. Jammer is wel dat de teksten, prachtig afgedrukt in een van de twee begeleidende boekjes, niet in het Engels zijn vertaald, net zoals de ondertiteling, die ontbreekt op de bijgeleverde DVD. Het hart van de muziek van Luar:Na:Lubre is melancholisch. Hoe vrolijk en opzwepend sommige stukken ook zijn, steeds blijft de muziek doordrenkt van poëtische weemoed. Een aantrekkingskracht waarin onmiskenbaar de kracht van deze voortreffelijke Galicische band schuilt.

For decades Luar:Na:Lubre is one of the most inspiring bands from Galicia (northern Spain). Also their latest album ‘Ribeira Sacra’, named after a region in Galicia, is a septet’s reflection of one of the most beautiful regions in Europe, with innovative (Celtic oriented) folk.

In the early nineties, Mike Oldfield provided a worldwide tour. This was an enormous push for Luar:Na:Lubre. When he in 1996 covers the song ‘O son do ar’ with the title ‘Song of the Sun’, their popularity grew fast and this lovely Spanish band became very popular. Nowadays, Luar:Na:Lubre is one of the best Galician groups with a very unique sound and splendid music. Founded in 1986 in A Coruña, a coastal town in the north of Galicia, the band develops the Galician folk into a unique style. Their music is Celtic oriented with some characteristics of western French and Irish folk. In a line-up of bagpipe, hurdy-gurdy, keys, accordion, violin, percussion, flute, wind instruments and acoustic guitar, the group creates an intense sound. The compositions are well arranged, with a clear structure, beautiful counter-melodies and striking vocals. Powerful voices that are just as recognizable as flamenco vocals, fado songs or French chanson. The inspiration for the album Ribeira Sacra (referring to the region) starts in the monastery of San Pedro de Rosas where Luar:Na:Lubre recorded their new album in 2018. Xavier Ferreiro, the percussionist, did some field work. In search for melodies from Ribeira Sacra, he recorded local traditional music which they used in their compositions. Moreover, the group also put some church, street and nature sounds in their compositions, which put some extra dimension and bring the pieces closer to the environment. It is unfortunate that the lyrics, beautifully printed in one of the two accompanying booklets, are not translated into English, just like the subtitles, which are missing on the included DVD. The heart of Luar:Na:Lubre’s music is poetic and melancholic. How cheerful and upbeat some pieces may be, the music is drenched in kind of melancholy, the power of this excellent Galician band.
