‘Summerwind’ is het schitterend album van bassist Lars Danielsson en trompettist Paolo Fresu. Een voortreffelijke CD waarop dit duo zich manifesteert als een lyrisch tweetal dat muziek speelt in meest pure vorm. Respectievelijk contrabas & cello en trompet & bugel klinken in fraaie stukken zowel nieuw gecomponeerd werk als enkele klassiekers waaronder ‘Autumn Leaves’ in een splinternieuwe versie.

De Zweedse bassist Lars Danielsson en de Italiaanse trompettist Paolo Fresu hebben beide een groot gevoel voor melodie en sfeer die ze uitermate goed benutten op ‘Summerwind’, hun eerste samenwerking. De muziek is suggestief en is muzikaal fijnzinnig waarbij de subtiliteit adembenemend en ongekend mooi is. De herkenbaar solide klank van trompettist Fresu past fraai bij het welluidende basspel van Danielsson. Zij spelen alleen de tonen die er werkelijk toe doen, de tonen die echt belangrijk zijn, waardoor ze de kern van muziek raken, puur en eerlijk. Bovendien is elke noot duidelijk hoorbaar en kunnen zij zich niet ‘verbergen’ achter andere instrumenten zoals piano, gitaar en drums. Wel wordt hier en daar gebruikt gemaakt van effecten om hun muziek meer diepgang te geven. Zo horen we delay (echo) in ‘Jag lyfer ögat…’, trompet-harmonizer (toon-verdubbelaar) in ‘Drexciya’ en veel galm in ‘Stanna Tid’. Al deze effecten zijn spaarzaam en met zorg gebruikt en maken de muziek rijker van nuance. Alle stukken hebben een bijna meditatief timbre en zetten aan tot mijmeren en nadenken. Bovendien speelt Danielsson niet alleen bas maar ook cello in ‘Un vestdo y un amor’ en ‘Sleep Safe And Warm (uit Rosemary’s Baby). De meeste stukken zijn originals die beide heren zelf componeerden en getuigen van grote vaardigheid en vakkennis. Alhoewel ‘Summerwind’ in de herfst van 2018 op de markt kwam en de winter voor de deur staat, geeft het album zeer veel muzikale zomerwarmte.

‘Summerwind’ is the brilliant album of bassist Lars Danielson and trumpeter Paolo Fresu. An excellent CD played by a lyrical duo with music in its purest form.

The Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson and the Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu have both a great sense of melody and atmosphere which they use in an excellent combination on ‘Summerwind’, their first collaboration. The music is full of evocative subtleties, and their subtlety is breathtaking and unprecedentedly beautiful. The recognizable sound of trumpet player Fresu fits nicely with the melodious bas sound of Danielsson. They only play the tones that really matter, the tones that are really important. In this way they touch the core of the music, pure and honest. In addition, each note is clearly audible and they can’t ‘hide’ behind other instruments such as piano, guitar and drums. However, here and there they use effects to give their music more depth. So we hear delay (echo) in ‘Jag lyfer ögat …’, trumpet-harmonizer (tone-doubler) in ‘Drexciya’ and a lot of reverberation in ‘Stanna Tid’. All these effects have been used sparingly and with care and make the music richer. All pieces have an almost meditative character and encourage to linger and think. Moreover, Danielsson plays not only bass but also cello in ‘Un vestdo y un amor’ and ‘Sleep Safe And Warm (from Rosemary’s Baby). Most pieces are originals composed by these great musicians and testify a great skill. Although ‘Summerwind’ came released in the autumn of 2018 and the winter is coming up, the album gives a lot of musical summer warmth.
