Als je naar de muziek luistert van de Belgische accordeoniste Sara Salvérius op haar CD ‘Trapped In Sight’ is ‘dualiteit’ het eerste wat opvalt. In je eentje spelen en dan zó, dat het net lijkt of je twee instrumenten, twee accordeons hoort. Indrukwekkend en imposant, waar het oor meer van wil….

Sara Salvérius bespeelt de diatonische accordeon. Een instrument dat qua klank lijkt op de ‘normale’ accordeon maar qua speeltechniek heel anders is. Op de eerste plaats zijn de (piano)toetsen in de rechterhand vervangen door druktoetsen en klinkt er een andere toon als je duwt of trekt aan de balg wat om een heel andere speeltechniek vraagt. Hetzelfde principe als bij de bandoneon of de mondharmonica. Als kind begon Sara Salvérius met pianospelen wat al snel werd ingeruild voor de diatonische accordeon. Ze studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Antwerpen en Gent en geeft tegenwoordig les aan de muziekschool van Sint-Agatha-Berchem.

De intens mooie CD ‘Trapped In Sight’ gaat over ‘afscheid nemen’, over het verlies van Sara Salvérius’ jongere zus die het leven niet meer aankon en zelf besloot dat het genoeg was. Een zeer persoonlijk verhaal dat bevlogen en inspirerend wordt weerspiegeld op ‘Trapped In Sight’ waarop Sara solo accordeon speelt. Fraaie composities, helder van structuur met op folk georiënteerde melodieën, bijna liedjes zonder woorden, waarbij de intensiteit van de muziek voor zich spreekt. Salvérius speelt beheerst, maakt mooi gebruik van dynamiek en laat haar ziel spreken via haar muziek waarbij ze de accordeon laat huilen in ’21 januari’, de machteloosheid klinkt in het titelstuk, de hoop in ‘Tiptoe’ of de zoektocht en wanhoop die hoorbaar zijn in ‘Kalileo’. De accordeon-klank, de composities en de uitvoering, ja het komt allemaal zo perfect samen op dit album dat het deze CD organisch mooi maakt. Niet vaak zó’n persoonlijk album gehoord, werkelijk genieten!

‘Duality’ is the first thing you notice if you listen to the music of the Belgian accordionist Sara Salvérius on her CD ‘Trapped In Sight’. Solo accordion which sounds like two accordions. Impressive!

Sara Salvérius plays the diatonic accordion. An instrument that resembles to the ‘normal’ accordion with almost the same sound but very different in terms of playing technique. The (piano) keys in the right hand are replaced by pushbuttons and a different tone sounds when you push or pull the bellows, like the bandoneon or the harmonica. As a child Sara Salvérius started playing the piano but changed it for the diatonic accordion. She studied at the Conservatory of Antwerp and Ghent and now teaches at the music school of Sint-Agatha-Berchem.

The intensely beautiful CD ‘Trapped In Sight’ is the loss of Sara Salvérius‘ younger sister who could not handle life anymore and decided that it was enough. A very personal story that is inspired Sara by composing the music for ‘Trapped In Sight’ on which she plays solo accordion. Beautiful compositions, clear structured pieces with folk-oriented melodies. Almost songs without words, in which the intensity of the music speaks for itself. Salvériusplays controlled, with the beautiful use of dynamics. Her soul speaks through her music. She lets the accordion cry in ’21 January ‘, the helplessness sounds in the title piece ‘Trapped In Sight’, the hope reflects in’ Tiptoe ‘or the search and despair which are audible in ‘Kalileo’. The accordion sound, the compositions and the performance, it all comes together that makes this a splendid album. Not often heard such a personal record, really great!
