Muziek geschreven door de Deense componist Poul Ruders getuigt van spannende originaliteit. Hij componeerde twee opera’s en orkestwerken waaronder vijf symphoniën. Zijn inventieve gitaar-kamermuziek is nu te vinden op het nieuwe album van gitarist David Starobin, met daarop solowerk, gitaarkwartet- en duostukken voor gitaar, hobo, viool en slagwerk.

De vriendschap tussen de Amerikaanse gitarist David Starobin en Poul Ruders ontstaat in 1986 als Starobin de Deense componist Ruders ontmoet tijdens het Tanglewood Festival. In 2018 brengt gitarist David Starobin de CD ‘Occam’s Razor’ uit met werk van Ruders, composties voor sologitaar aangevuld met werken voor duo’s en kwartet. Elk stuk is karakteristiek en speciaal. Zo komt een aantal werken (waaronder ‘Simply’, ‘Rocking’ en ‘Gentle’) uit de serie ‘Pages’ (bladzijde). Een titel die refereert aan de bladmuziek van deze composities die precies passen op één vel papier. De werken ‘Cantus Firmus’ (uit de serie ‘Three for Two’) zijn geschreven voor gitaar & viool. Deze palindrome’s zijn zowel van voor-naar-achter als van achter-naar-voor speelbaar. In ‘Cantus Fimus 2’ speelt de viool twee keer zo langzaam als de gitaar. Het titelstuk ‘Occam’s Razor’ is een duo van gitaar & hobo (gespeeld door Liang Wang). Een spannend werk, dat bestaat uit 8 delen waar beide instrumenten fraaie solistische trekken hebben. Dat geldt niet voor ‘Schrödinger’s Cat’ uit 2012 voor gitaar en viool (gespeeld door Amalia Hall). Een werk dat bestaat uit 12 korte Canons en geïnspireerd is op een ‘kat die opgesloten zit in een kistje‘. Het werk is een imposant samenspel tussen viool en gitaar in ritme (verdubbeling en cross-ritmes) en melodie. in ‘New Rochelle Suite’ klinkt een verrassende sensatie voor gitaar en slagwerk (gespeeld door Daniel Druckman). De gitaarklank krijgt een nieuwe kleur en wordt hier en daar bijna orkestraal door het gebruik van diverse percussieinstrumenten waaronder de (snare)trommel, rasp en shakers. David Starobin is een gitaar-cameleon die zich moeiteloos beweegt binnen de sfeer en ambiance van deze breed georiënteerde muziek. Hij speelt virtuoos, gedreven, en is een belevenis voor de avontuurlijke klassieke muziek liefhebber.

Music written by the Danish composer Poul Ruders testifies exciting originality. He composed two operas and orchestral works including five symphonies. His inventive guitar-chamber music can now be found on the new album by guitarist David Starobin, with excellent solo work, music for guitar quartet and duo pieces for guitar, oboe, violin and percussion.

The friendship between the American guitarist David Starobin and Poul Ruders started in 1986 when Starobin met the Danish composer Ruders during the Tanglewood Festival. In 2018, guitarist David Starobin released the CD ‘Occam’s Razor’ with works composed by Ruders for solo guitar supplemented with compositions for duos and quartet. Each piece is characteristic and special. For example, a number of works (including ‘Simply’, ‘Rocking’ and ‘Gentle’) come from the ‘Pages’ series. A title that refers to sheet music of these compositions that fits exactly on one sheet of paper. ‘Cantus Firmus’ (from the series ‘Three for Two’) are written for guitar & violin. These palindrome’s are playable from front-to-back and from back-to-front. In ‘Cantus Fimus 2’ the violin plays twice as slowly as the guitar. The title piece ‘Occam’s Razor’ is a duo of guitar & oboe (played by Liang Wang). An exciting work, consisting of 8 parts where both instruments have beautiful solo features. That does not apply to ‘Schrödinger’s Cat’ from 2012 for guitar and violin (played by Amalia Hall). A work that consists of 12 short canons is inspired by ‘a cat locked in a box’. The composition is an impressive combination between violin and guitar in rhythm (doubling and cross-rhythms) and melody. In ‘New Rochelle Suite’ sounds a surprising sensation for guitar and percussion (played by Daniel Druckman). The guitar sound gets a new color and becomes almost orchestral through the use of various percussion instruments including the (snare) drum, rasp and shakers. David Starobin is a guitar chameleon who moves effortlessly within the atmosphere and ambiance of this broadly oriented music. He plays virtuoso, passionate and is an experience for the adventurous classical music lover.
