De Amerikaanse zangeres Eva Salina bracht onlangs de geweldige CD ‘Sudbina’ (Noodlot) op de markt waarop zij werk zingt van Vida Pavlovic (1945 – 2005). Een sevdalinka en zigeunerzangeres die in de ’70 en ’80-er jaren furore maakte in Belgrado. Eva Salina wordt virtuoos begeleid door accordeonist Peter Stan.

Op Eva Salina‘s vorige album ‘Lema Lema’ uit 2016 stond het werk van de Servische zanger Saban Bajramovic centraal. Nu, op de CD ‘Sudbina’, is het zangeres Vida Pavlovic die de verbindende factor is. Een vocaliste die in de jaren ’70 en ’80 populair was in Bosnië en o.a. de sevdalinka zong, de levensliederen van Bosnië en Herzegovina, waarin de ‘sevdah’, de melancholie, zo prachtig wordt weerspiegeld. Bij deze stijl hoort een zeer herkenbare wijze van zingen die we ook tegenkomen bij zangeres Amira (Medunjanin) en de groepen Divanhana en de Mostar Sevdah Reunion. Vanaf de eerste klanken van dit derde album van Eva Salina is het duidelijk dat zij samen met haar begeleider, de accordeonist Peter Stan, absolute kenners zijn van sevdalinka. De stembuigingen, de versieringen en het karakteristieke accordeonspel vormen een eenheid. Een prachtig muzikaal decor voor deze intens doorleefde, maar toch ook sobere muziek. Maar pas op, want daar wringt de schoen. Alhoewel de muziek sober is, moet je de sevdah goed begrijpen en intens aanvoelen, als je deze Bosnische muziek geloofwaardig wilt brengen. En alhoewel de muziek van Eva Salina en Peter Stan geen originele sevdahlinka composities zijn, is het album ‘Sudbina’ zeer de moeite waard!

Recently the American singer Eva Salina released the great CD ‘Sudbina’ (Doom) on which she sings songs by Vida Pavlovic (1945 – 2005). A sevdalinka and gipsy singer who was a star in Belgrade in the ’70s and ’80s. Eva Salina is accompanied by the virtuoso accordionist Peter Stan.

‘Lema Lema’ from 2016 was the previous album on which Eva Salina sang songs by the Serbian singer Saban Bajramovic. On her new CD ‘Sudbina’, it is singer Vida Pavlovic who is the connecting factor. A vocalist who was popular in Bosnia in the 70s and 80s and sang the sevdalinka, the folk songs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which the ‘sevdah’, the melancholy, is so beautifully reflected. A very recognizable way of singing that we also encounter with singer Amira (Medunjanin) and the bands Divanhana and the Mostar Sevdah Reunion. From the first harmonies of this third album by Eva Salina it is clear that Salina, together with her accompanist, the accordionist Peter Stan, are absolute connoisseurs of sevdalinka. The vocals, the ornaments and the characteristic accordion play form an unity. A musical setting for this austere music. But be aware, because that’s why this music is so special. Although the music is sober, as a musician you have to understand the sevdah and feel it intensely inside, if you want to make this Bosnian music lively, you have to feel it intensely in your heart. Only in this manner you will be able to perform this music in a proper and sincere way. And, although the songs of Eva Salina and Peter Stan are not original sevdahlinka compositions, the album ‘Sudbina’ is a stunning record!
