Zelden zulke bijzondere metaforische muziek gehoord als van het trio NES uit Valencia (Spanje). Slechts met drie instrumenten komt er bij percussionist David Gadea, cellist en zanger Matthieu Saglio en zangeres en celliste Nesrine Belmokh een scala aan stijlen voorbij die met vakkundige souplesse de kern van muziek raakt. Dat maakt hun debuut ‘Ahlam’ een bijzonder album.

De drie musici David Gadea, Matthieu Saglio en Nesrine Belmokh ontmoetten elkaar in Valencia, Spanje, en richten het trio NES op. Het debuutalbum ‘Ahlam’ (‘Droom’) is inderdaad een ‘droom’ van een CD en slaat in als een muzikale bom waarop dit trio overtuigend diverse stijlen laat horen. Zó doortastend, dat het wel lijkt alsof je soms per nummer naar een andere CD luistert. Om te beginnen zingt Nesrine Belmokh geloofwaardig in het Engels, Frans en Arabisch met een aangename dictie met voortreffelijk warme stembuigingen waarbij linken worden gelegd naar respectievelijk pop, jazz, chanson en de Arabische signatuur. Dat laatste wordt nog eens versterkt door de cello die in verschillende stukken klinkt als een gumbri, een Afrikaans luit-achtig instrument dat wordt gebruikt bij sufi (Gnawa) muziek aangevuld met het gebruik van Arabische percussie zoals de darbouka (vaastrommel). Bovendien speelt de cello ook de rijke kwarttoon-versieringen die onontbeerlijk zijn voor de Arabische muziek. De arrangementen zitten vol suggesties waardoor je meer hoort dan er werkelijk klinkt. Dat getuigt van vakmanschap, muzikale kennis en instrumentbeheersing. Wie na beluistering van dit album nog niet overtuigd is van de kwaliteit van dit trio, kan ze altijd nog live bewonderen in het Bimhuis van Amsterdam op 20 oktober 2018 tijdens de Cello Biennale.

Rarely heard such special metaphorical music like the trio NES from Valencia (Spain). Only with three instruments; percussionist David Gadea, cellist and singer Matthieu Saglio and singer and cellist Nesrine Belmokh create a range of musical styles that easily touches the heart of music with professional flexibility. That makes their début ‘Ahlam’ a special album.

The three musicians David Gadea, Matthieu Saglio and Nesrine Belmokh met each other in Valencia, Spain, and started the trio NES. The debut album ‘Ahlam’ (‘Dream’) is indeed a dream to come true. This trio plays convincingly music in various styles. Very well done that it seems that you’re sometimes listening to a CD from different artists. To begin with, Nesrine Belmokh sings credibly in English, French and Arabic with a pleasant diction and an exquisitely warm vocalizations whereby links are made to respective pop, jazz, chanson and the Arabic signature. The latter is further enhanced by the cello which sounds in several pieces like a gumbri, an African lute-like instrument used in sufi (Gnawa) music, added by wonderful the use of Arabic percussion such as darbouka (hand drum). Moreover, the cello also plays the rich quarter-tone ornaments that are indispensable for Arabic music. The arrangements are full of suggestions so that you hear more than there really sounds. That testifies to musicianship, musical knowledge and instrument control. Are you still not convinced of the quality after listening to this wonderful album, you can always see and hear them at the Bimhuis of Amsterdam (Netherlands) on October 20, 2018 during the Cello Biennale.
