Een van de beste ‘jazz’-CD’s van de laatste tijd is ongetwijfeld het studio-debuut-album The Truth van het Poolse Tubis Trio van pianist Maciej Tubis, bassist Pawel Puszczlo en drummer Przemyslaw Pacan. Dit uit Lodz en Warschau afkomstige drietal bewijst met transparante muziek een uitstekende aftrap voor een glanzende carrière.

In 2006 formeerden drie jonge musici het Tubis Trio, waarmee ze aanvankelijk alleen live-CD’s uitbrachten, waaronder Live in Luxemburg uit 2009. Nu is er dan hun eerste studio-album waarmee van deze Poolse groep zich wederom bewijst met een aantal strakke en zeer melodische composities. Al jaren is Polen een land waar veel goede jazzmusici vandaan komen, zoals de saxofonisten Zbiegniew Namyslowski en Tomasz Szukalski en pianist Leszek Możdżer die onder andere albums uitbracht met de Zweedse superbassist Lars Danielson en de Finse pianist Iiro Rantala.

Het Tubis Trio manifesteert zich als een compact drietal dat met uitgekiende composities het scala van jazz, pop en rock verkent met de piano in de hoofdrol. Alle composities zijn van pianist Maciej Tubis die de kunst van de melodie verstaat. Hij componeert stukken die aanvankelijk eenvoudig aandoen en klinken als ‘lieder ohne Worte’ (liedjes zonder woorden). Deze worden gelardeerd met een voortreffelijke linkerhand (zoals in 2.31 PM en Tokyo), onregelmatige maatsoorten (Tokyo), maatwisselingen (Peloponnese) en uitstekend coherent samenspel met bas en drums. Fraai hoe de solo in I forgot the plot zweeft boven de begeleiding en Maciej Tubis de modale-structuur opzoekt, zonder zich te ver van de luisteraar te distantiëren. Het Tubis Trio klinkt energiek, dynamisch, fris en opgetogen. Dat classificeert hun innovatieve album The Truth in februari al tot een van beste jazz-CD’s uit 2018, een hele prestatie!

One of the best ‘jazz’ CD’s of recent times is undoubtedly the studio début album The Truth by the Polish Tubis Trio by pianist Maciej Tubis, bassist Pawel Puszczlo and drummer Przemyslaw Pacan. They come from Lodz and Warsaw. With transparent and excellent music they show a wonderful kick-off for a shiny career.

In 2006 the young musicians formed the Tubis Trio. They only released live CDs, including Live in Luxemburg from 2009. The Truth is their first studio album on which this Polish group proves themself with a number of tight and very melodic compositions. For years Poland is a country where many good jazz musicians come from, such as the saxophonists Zbiegniew Namyslowski and Tomasz Szukalski and the pianist Leszek Możdżer who released albums with the Swedish super bass player Lars Danielson and the Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala.

The Tubis Trio is a compact group that explores the range of jazz, pop and rock with the piano in the leading role with sophisticated music. All compositions are by pianist Maciej Tubis who understands the art of the melody. He composes pieces that initially seem simple and sound like ‘lieder ohne Worte‘ (songs without words). These songs are larded with an excellent left hand playing (as in 2.31 PM and Tokyo), irregular time signatures (Tokyo), signatures changes (Peloponnese) and excellent coherent interplay between piano, bass and drums. It is nice how the solo in I forgot the plot floats on the accompaniment and Maciej Tubis uses the modal structure without distancing himself from the listener. The Tubis Trio is energetic, dynamic, fresh and elated. Their innovative album The Truth is in February already one of the best jazz CDs from 2018, quite an achievement!
