De Zwitserse componist en violist Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) bracht het grootste deel van zijn leven door in Amerika waar hij ook zijn twee sonates voor viool en piano en zijn piano-sonate uit 1935 componeerde. De Israelische violiste Nurit Stark en de Zwitserse pianist Cedric Pescia vertolken op meesterlijke wijze het werk van deze bijna vergeten componist.

Violist en componist Ernest Bloch werd geboren in Genève waar hij studeerde aan het conservatorium (later ook nog in Brussel, Frankfurt, München en Parijs). Alhoewel hij veel orkestwerken, vocale en kamermuziek schreef, is zijn werk internationaal niet zo bekend. In 1916 verhuist Bloch naar Amerika waar hij dirigent wordt en zich meer toelegt op het schrijven van Joodse muziek: ik ben jood en streef ernaar joodse muziek te schrijven, zo zei hijzelf. Echter, op dit album Bloch Sonates horen we kamermuziek, gespeeld op viool en piano, waar deze ‘Joodse muziek’ nauwelijks terug te vinden is. De muziek van Ernest Bloch is bepaald niet gemakkelijk en vraagt naast een degelijke instrumentbeheersing ook een flinke dosis inlevingsvermogen. Violiste Nurit Stark en pianist Cedric Pescia voeren zijn muziek krachtig, dynamisch en energiek uit, zeer fraai en trefzeker. Dit duo bezit een spannende virtuositeit die moeiteloos meegaat in de verhaallijn van deze epische muziek. In de composities van Bloch horen we invloeden van Modest Moessorgski, wat zich uit in de magistrale akkoorden die óp-de-tel worden gespeeld (met kleuren uit Moessorgski’s Schilderijententoonstelling), het impressionisme van Claude Debussy, pentatoniek die Orientaals aandoet en psalm-kleuren in het middendeel van Poeme Mystique. De Bloch Sonates nemen je mee in een fantasierijke muzikale wereld, en als deze wereld ook nog schitterend wordt uitgevoerd is het iets meer dan 70 minuten uiterst genieten!

The Swiss composer and violinist Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) spent most of his life in America where he also composed his two sonatas for violin and piano and his piano sonata from 1935. The Israeli violinist Nurit Stark and Swiss pianist Cedric Pescia masterfully play the work of this almost forgotten composer.

Violinist and composer Ernest Bloch was born in Genève where he studied at the conservatory (later also in Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich and Paris). Although he wrote many orchestral works, vocal and chamber music, his work is not so well known internationally. In 1916, Bloch moved to America where he became a conductor and devoted himself more to writing Jewish music: I am a Jew and strive to write Jewish music, he said. However, on this CD Bloch Sonates we hear chamber music, played on violin and piano, where this ‘Jewish music’ can hardly be found. The music of Ernest Bloch is not easy to play at all and it requires a good dose of empathy in addition to instrument control. Violinist Nurit Stark and pianist Cedric Pescia perform his music powerfully, dynamically and very energetic, beautiful and accurate. This duo possesses an exciting virtuosity that effortlessly accompanies the storyline of this epic music. In Bloch’s compositions we hear influences from Modest Mussorgsky, which is expressed in the magisterial chords that are played (with colors from Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition), the impressionism of Claude Debussy, pentatonics that touches Oriental music and psalm colors in the middle part of Poeme Mystique. The Bloch Sonatas take you into an imaginative musical world, and if this world is also beautifully performed, there are 70 minutes to enjoy. Great album!
