‘Memorias do Fado‘ is een verzamel-album met fado-liederen uit Coimbra. Een universiteitsstad in het noorden van Portugal die naast Lissabon ook een grote fado-traditie kent. Oude 78-toeren opnames van diverse zangers zijn gedigitaliseerd en uitgebracht onder de naam ‘Vozes e sons de Coimbra’.

Velen kennen de fado uit Lissabon, waar de grote sterren als Amália Rodrigues, de meest invloedrijke fadozangeres die in 1999 overleed, Cristina Branco, Dulce Pontes, Joana Amendoeira, Mariza vandaan komen.

Veel minder bekend is de fado uit Coimbra die alleen door mannen wordt gezongen, door studenten en professoren die hun hart luchten over de liefde, afscheid en het vaarwel zeggen tegen het studentenleven. Op de prachtig vormgegeven CD ‘Vozes e sons de Coimbra’ vinden we een fraaie collectie oude opnames die is gedigitaliseerd en uitgegeven met een prachtig boekje (helaas zonder Engelse vertaling) vol foto’s van de artiesten. We horen intens heldere vocalen zoals die van de rechtenstudent en tenor Edmundo Alberto Bettencourt (1899/1973 – foto rechts) die zijn eigen gedichten schreef die door anderen op muziek werden gezet. Of Artur Paredes (foto onder) die uit een muzikale familie kwam: zijn vader en oom waren ook gitarist. Hij was een voortreffelijk componist die fraai de volksmuziek mengde met de fado, luister maar eens naar de virtuoze instrumentale stukken ‘Variacoes em Ré Menor’ of  ‘Bailados do Minho‘ waar hij te horen is als vernieuwer, die de guitara Portuguesa een frisse kleur bezorgde met nieuwe harmonieën en innoverende gitaartechnieken. Op deze compilatie wordt zijn muziek gezongen door Guilherme Barbaso. Ook de tenoren Antonio Paulo Menano, José Paradela de Oliviera en Lucas Rodrigues Junot zijn te horen op deze mooie verzameling waarbij deze laatste uitblinkt door zijn voortreffelijk timbre en trefzekerheid in ‘Fado Sepúlveda‘ uit 1927. Alle stukken worden begeleid op traditionele wijze door twee gitaren waarbij de ene de akkoorden en het ritme speelt en de 2de gitaar, de guitara Portuguesa, de versieringen en omspelingen. Deze ornamenten vullen de vocalen aan, werken contemplatief en geven de prachtige, heldere tenoren, die soms nauwelijks van een vrouwenstem te onderscheiden zijn, nog meer transparantie waardoor ‘Memorias do Fado’ een prachtige herinnering is van een vervlogen tijd: door dit album voor altijd te beluisteren. En dat is maar goed ook!

‘Memorias do Fado‘ is a collection of fado songs from Coimbra. An university city in northern Portugal with a great fado tradition next to Lisbon. ‘Vozes e sons de Coimbra‘ is the compilation name of  78-recordings of various singers which have been digitized.

Many people know the fado from Lisbon, where the great stars such as Cristina Branco, Dulce Pontes, Joana Amendoeira, Mariza and of course Amália Rodrigues come from, the most influential fado singer who died in 1999.

Much less familiar to most listeners is the fado from Coimbra, which is only sung by men, by students and professors who sing about love, farewell and saying goodbye to their student life. On this beautiful designed CD ‘Vozes e sons de Coimbra‘ we find a beautiful collection of old recordings that have been digitized and published with a beautiful booklet (unfortunately without English translation) full of pictures of the artists. Beautiful clear vocals such as the student and tenor Edmundo Alberto Bettencourt (1899/1973 – picture left) who wrote his own poems that were put to music by others. Or guitara Portuguesa player Artur Paredes (picture right) who was raised in a musical family: his father and uncle were also a guitarist. He was an excellent composer who mixed folk music with fado, just listen to the virtuoso instrumental pieces ‘Variacoes em Ré Menor’ or ‘Bailados do Minho’. He was an innovator who gave the guitara Portuguesa a fresh color with new harmonies and innovative guitar techniques. On this compilation his music is sung by Guilherme Barbaso. The great tenors Antonio Paulo Menano, José Paradela de Oliviera and Lucas Rodrigues Junot can also be heard on this beautiful collection. The last one is very exquisite by his excellent timbre and accuracy in ‘Fado Sepúlveda‘ from 1927. All pieces are accompanied in the traditional way by two guitars where one plays the chords and rhythm and the 2nd guitar, the guitara Portuguesa, the decorates the melody. These ornaments fill the vocals, work contemplatively and give the music it’s wonderful atmosphere. ‘Memorias do Fado‘ is a wonderful memory of a bygone era, with music you can listen to forever. And that’s great!
