De van oorsprong uit Turkije afkomstige ud (Arabische luit)-speler Mehmet Polat draait al heel wat jaren mee binnen het schemergebied van de Oriëntaalse muziek. Zo ook op zijn laatste CD ‘Ask Your Heart‘ waarop hij te horen is met Dymphi Peeters op de kora (West-Afrikaanse harp) en Sinan Arat op de ney, de hees klinkende herdersfluit.

Mehmet Polat woont sinds 2007 in Amsterdam nadat hij in Istanboel Ottomaanse muziek studeerde. In 2014 bracht hij met zijn Mehmet Polat Trio de CD ‘Next Spring‘ uit. Een prachtig metaforisch album dat een nieuwe muzikale periode reflecteert van de  muzikale weg die Polat vanaf dat moment insloeg om zich volledig te concentreren op zijn eigen muziek, met zichzelf in de hoofdrol als uitmuntend musicus, componist, bandleider en zanger. Een muzikaal pad waar, in de ongebruikelijke bezetting, ud, ney en kora, de meest prachtige en transparante muziek werd gecreëerd. Iets soortgelijks gebeurt er op zijn nieuwe CD ‘Ask Your Heart’ waar ook weer de liefde voor Oriëntaalse muziek van alle kanten vanaf straalt. Maar er is meer. Zo klinkt er o.a. minimal music, Gypsy, Balkan en een jazz-melange. En het is de combinatie van deze stijlen, samen met de Oriëntaalse signatuur, die deze muziek zo bijzonder maakt. Bovendien zorgen de vele abrupte wendingen in ritme, tempo en melodie voor een breed scala aan muzikale heerlijkheden. Soms heel klein en intiem, dan weer uitvergroot en overweldigend. Elk instrument krijgt muzikaal de ruimte. Thema’s worden unisono gespeeld (een van de Arabische kenmerken) en zowel ud, ney als kora spelen solo’s. ‘Ask Your Heart‘ is een vraag die deze musici zichzelf moeten hebben gesteld, want alleen dan ontstaat er zulke gedreven en tintelende muziek.

For years the Turkisch musician Mehmet Polat lives in the Netherlands and for years he plays a kind of oriental music, which is also te be found on his last CD ‘Ask Your Heart‘, with Dymphi Peeters on the kora (West African harp) and Sinan Arat on the ney, the shepherd flute.

Since 2007 Mehmet Polat lives in Amsterdam after studying Ottoman music in Istanbul. In 2014 he released the CD ‘Next Spring‘ with his Mehmet Polat Trio. A magnificent metaphorical album reflecting a new musical period of the musical path on which Polat introduced his own music, with himself as the composer, band leader and singer. A musical path where, in the unusual combination of ud, ney and kora, the most beautiful and transparent music was created. Something similar happens on his new CD  ‘Ask Your Heart‘, with love for oriental music. But there’s more. For example, there is minimal music, Gypsy, Balkan, Jazz sounds. A combination of these styles, along with the Oriental signature makes this music so special. In addition, the many quick moves in rhythm, tempo and melody provide a wide range of musical delights. Sometimes very tiny and intimate, then magnified and overwhelming. Each instrument gets it’s musical space. Themes are played unisono (one of the Arabic features) and both ud, ney and kora have solistic space. ‘Ask Your Heart‘ is a question that these musicians must have asked themselves, otherwise they couldn’t play such a wonderful and tingling music.
